Meantime, can your folks grow food and raise chickens etc, if they're on a farm? Your nephew could help out (depending on his age - if he's over 8 then for sure). Maybe you could go home and do the planting for them, since you can't attend lectures at the moment. Producing your own food dramatically reduces your dependence on supermarkets, and saves a lot of money.

All beaches should be closed. They are FAR from 'essential', and are causing massive problems with crowds in every country where beach culture exists.

 

Deliveries here are contactless. The driver doesn't get anywhere near your open front door. They're not allowed to. As the recipient, you're required to keep door closed until they've left the property unless you need to show ID (from a safe distance .. like 4 metres minimum). Packages are left on the most distant point from the door, and still vaguely on your porch/steps/entry etc. Drivers are gloved, and packages are sealed in back of vans .. which are sealed from drivers' compartment. They're probably safer than the people receiving the stuff.

If you live in an apartment, you're plumb out of luck in terms of safety anyway. Besides, there are rumours that the large supermarket chains may ban deliveries to high density housing at some point, due to the risk to their drivers. Not as bad as it sounds - in this country it's mostly the wealthy living in such housing, so they can figure it out for themselves. The poor live in outer suburbs here, so no problemo

I live in Solano County near Sacramento. We have 450,000 people, 4 deaths, and a decreasing daily case number for the last three weeks. Two thirds of the cases etc. are in the LA area. And yet the morons in charge of our county have extended the lockdown for three weeks until 5/18. There are protests in Sacramento every day it seems. Newsom has been on TV stating that this shutdown is an opportunity to implement progressive ideas like healthcare for illegal aliens. Instead of helping the homeless with treatment for mental illness and substance abuse he’s forcing hotels to provide rooms where they can congregate close together out of the wind and sunlight. What could go wrong?

 

So far out of touch. Where do you think those packages come from? They don’t just magically appear in a delivery van. People and drivers must sort and load those packages. As usual for the left they only think of what happens to themselves.

Maintained control? They have the 11th worst rate of deaths per million population in the world. 8th worst if you take out really tiny nations like Andorra, St Maarten and San Marino where a small number of deaths can skew the figures enormously.
And they are continuing to log new cases and new deaths. There is little evidence that the Swedish approach is "better" than the stay-at-home approach. Particularly when you compare their death rate per million to their neighbors Finland and Norway, which have a rate about 1/6th of Sweden's.

 

It's as if these leftist political leaders are unaquainted with the concept called consequences or logical repercussions. They come up with these Utopia-based schemes and dreams and then utterly discount both reality and human nature as a pair of permanent factors. For them every crisis is a political opportunity to implement a large slice of social engineering.

My nephew will be three, so unfortunately he's another mouth to feed right now. Luckily we get some money from the state for that, not to get overly complicated. While they can do that, and I myself will be trying in the coming weeks, it won't be enough immediately.

As for why I would get her sick? Because if I'm going in and out to get money (I would be working my old job probably), I'm going to be an "essential worker". And I know the people who visit that store aren't going to be the healthiest. One of my old co-workers posted that she got yelled at by someone for telling them to listen to social distancing in the store.
