Following the historic nomination of the first woman of color to the presidential ticket for a major party, something extraordinary happened. The incumbent president’s approval rating went up. According to Rasmussen, President Trump’s daily approval rating, which had been bouncing around in the high 40s since early August, jumped three points from the day before to 51%.


Rasmussen recorded a similar three-point swing in the “strongly approve” and “strongly disapprove” ratings. On August 19th, 35% of likely voters strongly approved of the job Trump is doing, while 44% strongly disapproved. On Thursday, those ratings were 38% and 41%, respectively. It is interesting to note that Barack Obama’s approval rating hovered in a similar range between July and August leading up to his reelection in 2012, according to Gallup.

When you give your opponent a bigger convention bounce than your own, that might mean you are in bigger trouble than you think....

A polling bump for the VP pick and then for the convention is common, but, it's not supposed to be a bump for your opponent!

First, Rasmussen is a known republican leaning pollster. So consider that.

Secondly, what does a VP pick by the opposing candidate have to do with Trump's approval rating which is allegedly earned by actions Trump takes? Obviously nothing.

What are the other polls showing on approval rating? The same underwater story much like the Little Mermaid that Trump has experience all his presidency.

Should I consider your conclusion a good one? Nope.

Here's a better conclusion. Trump supporters are more supportive of Trump as the election draws near. That makes more sense. The only ones bothered by a black/Indian woman for VP are...Trump supporters. And who gives more weight to Trump supporters? Rasmussen. Therefore, this result is not unexpected.

 

Last I checked, blackness is only questioned when black people are nominated for high office...usually by people such as yourself. I'm sure you have a good reason for it. Maybe it will come up at your next rally?

Two problems here. Biden is also getting a bump of the exact same rate. So that means Trump is still underwater, just a little higher under water...again, this is actually not uncommon. Trump supporters tuned in to the convention to affirm their belief in Trump. Biden supporters did the same. Both came away affirmed. And it reflects in the polling.

You're reference to Rasmussen was significant in that he has Trump at 51% job approval versus 47% disapprove. NO ONE has Trump there but him. So yes, Trump's rating went up. He's still 13.4 points under water. Biden bumped up too. So sounds like a win win...??

I doubt this has anything to do with the convention. This is Trump's approval rating, not Biden's. 51% has been the upper end with Rasmussen since the end of last month. This is normal tightening of the polls as we approach election day. Rasmussen still has Trump losing the election by 4, and an incumbent should never be underwater with approval, yet here we are championing Trump's rare feat of cracking 50%. Not really something that instills confidence. Seems more like desperation.
