We don't have one of these! Anyone a fan of folk music? 'Folk' music might mean very different things to different people, of course, depending on who their own 'folk' happen to be, but that's part of what makes the world so interesting (and it's always good to hear the different 'folk' musical traditions from around the world). Feel free to post any kind of 'folk' music you like - acoustic, electric, old, new, whatever! Here's a few to start things off: John Tams (what a fabulous voice!): Carthy & Swarbrick: Something Welsh: And something very old and traditional:
Some more electric kind of folk stuff: Blackmore's Night (featuring ex-Deep Purple and Rainbow guitarist, Ritchie Blackmore): Steeleye Span (Maddie Prior - another fabulous voice!): Fairport Convention: And something American, Diana Jones:
An old Welsh folk tune: And another: And modern Welsh folk classic:
Another old Welsh tune: and another modern classic:
Since it's St Piran's Day, perhaps we should have something Cornish:
Had to look her up. How delightful Sadly, I am twisting my tongue trying to sing along. Not a pretty picture.
How about some Northumbrian pipe music: Beautiful sound (although I'll admit my personal preference would always be for the Highland pipes). and let's have something Norwegian, too: My own love for folk music probably partly comes from a Norwegian folk record that my parents have (bought when they were on holiday in Norway many years ago - some local folk band they happened to see, and bought a souvenir), and I loved when I was little. It had versions of both of these songs on it (somewhat better versions than these ones, in fact!):
And let's add a little bit of Scandinavian Folk Metal:
Something a bit different, one of my all time favorites. So much so, it drives the husband crazy

Billy Bragg: Richard Thompson:
A truly haunting song...Wildfire. (Note: the singer is about 65!)
Strange and stupid American irony. Japanese love russian songs. Подмосковные Вечера
I have spent an fair amount of time working in Ireland over the years, County Galway to be specific, a section of the country that has always remained fiercely Irish. Aside form the horrific weather, the bad food, and the Irish not being the most handsome people. the music is absolutely wonderful. Not drinking, but still being drug out to pubs, I got hooked on what they call "trad", the modern interpretations of traditional songs, some of them hundreds of years old, being played with non electric instruments, Upon returning to the states, I discovered there is a fairly large following of both paddy punk and more traditional forms over here. I certainly appreciate that these folks skipped the auto tuned singing and keybords to pick up a tin whistle and mandolin. Additionally, when I am there, I love listening to the buskers down on Quay Street. This kid is actually Dutch, and what he lacks in tonal quality I can definitely say he makes up in volume. That kid can shake the paint off of wall inside a pub.
Closely related to Irish music and having swapped techniques back and forth over the last century and a half, I dig the bluegrass, big time.
