If you have seen this movie about the helpless guys out in the snowy wilderness facing those vicious wolves, do you think you could somehow escape from those wolves?
I've always wondered....were the wolves supposed to be real or was that some sort of symbolic thing about them all dying out there?
I usually try to avoid films / tv shows with a central theme involving airplane crashes, but I did see this movie. The portrayal of the wolves as man-eaters was a bit over the top..however if the question posed is sincere. Could I realistically survive a wolf attack if placed in a similar situation as the characters in The Grey. Well. As a former commercial / military pilot I carried an ASEK aircrew survival knife strapped to my ankle most of the time (when allowed). The utilization of the knife wasn't so much as preparation to ward off an animal attack should the aircraft go down in a wilderness area. The knife is designed to slice through seat belt restraints, break windows and cut through the aluminum skin of an aircraft in order to egress as quickly as possible. In other words, get the hell out of dodge and away from a potentially burning airplane. I suppose I could have used this knife to ward off an animal attack, provided it's one on one and not an actual pack of wolves. Given my size, at well over 200 lbs., as long as I'm not knocked off my feet, I think an honest answer would be yes, I could dispatch a wolf, certainly not without sustaining some type of bites however, some serious enough to require stitches. So I'd be more apt to avoid a conflict with a wolf, given the scenario would not end well for either of us. Besides, if I was faced with being exposed to the elements in the Arctic tundra as portrayed in the movie, that would more than likely kill me first before the wolves would. They'd probably eat my carcass after I perished from exposure provided adequate shelter could not be obtained.
