The Myth of the Southern Strategy

No, I didn't say that. I said Dems don't "do the same thing." There is nothing wrong with "playing racial politics", at least if by that you just mean campaigning on race-related issues. There are good things and evil things one can do related to race and politics. Campaigning against racism is obviously good and campaigning for racism is obviously bad.

Many of the southern states went from voting 75% Democratic to 75% Republican in a single election after the CRA passed. That 75% that voted Democratic is the Dixiecrats- southern Democrats. So, at least 2/3 of them had to have switched mathematically. Actually though, it was nearly all of them. The 25% that voted Democratic after the CRA in the south was almost all black voters who had voted Republican up until the CRA.

 

Was the southern strategy racist and if it was, how?

 

I already answered that clearly as well. There isn't any point in repeating myself, so I guess that's the end of that discussion unless you have anything further.

Again- yes, it was explicitly racist. It was an overtly anti-civil rights campaign to gain political power by appealing to the racial fears of white southerners.
