This is a commonly held sentiment, that crosses both sides. I looked for forms of the quotation, and found a surprising amount of variety from some surprising sources.

And West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette.

Now, I've recently heard - and far from the first time - this kind of statement used to defend gay marriage. Partisan bigotry aside, why are people comfortable using this to defend gay marriage but not gun rights?

So because people are born psychopaths you have no problem with them reproducing.

Not everything is about you and your possible psychological issues. Children have no voice in this, and dont need freaks screwing their minds up so the imposters posing as parents can feel normal.

Comparing homosexuality to a mental disorder is rather telling of your knowledge of the human brain.

Homosexuality is not a mental disorder, or a sickness. However, Homophobia can be sourced and linked to Schizophrenia.

There is an overwhelming amount of Heterosexual couples that have done some awful things to their children in the past. Their sexual preference wasn't taken into account for their reasoning on why a couple decided to beat their kid anytime they cried, or duck tape them and lock them in the closet.

Some are born homosexual too, should they not get the same rights as everyone else?

Of course they should, including the right to bear arms.

Yeah let's forget the "Well regulated" part should we?

Sorry if I believe everyone should have a right to marry who they love while also believing not everyone should have access to 9mm handguns or AR-15's

Well regulated = well trained in 1789

Of course, you don't believe in the Constitution. The Constitution guarantees no right to marry, period. However, it does guarantee the "right of the people" to keep and bear arms.

So can we not start training and screening people and deem them qualified to maintain and operate firearms?

Oh hey, I love it when people throw this at me, thinking this makes my opinion any less invalid.

The Constitution also doesn't say anything about allowing to take away ones individual right to marry.

Right, the people who are well-regulated or well-trained. Tests, screenings, and background checks are the best place to start.

When I went to bed last night I thought about it quite a deal... I have no real understanding as to why it's justifiable to give certain groups rights but, then take away the rights of another. If they're on the same issue or not it doesn't make any sense. Either you're for personal freedom or you're not.

I'm glad you brought up the Militia Act considering most people do not know about it all.

I'm not surprised either you, or 10A could not understand the comparison.

No ones right to marry has been taken away. A heterosexual man is free to marry a woman. A homosexual man is free to marry a woman. A heterosexual woman is free to marry a man. A homosexual woman is free to marry a man.

Sure, since just about everyone is part of the militia, you get trained and get a gun too. Congratulations!

No, go read the 2A again.

When do we start screening and training people to get married? I guess the question should be... when do we start getting involved with everyone's personal lives based upon every personal choice they make?

But it does specify that citizens have the right to own and carry firearms. The word "militia" has changed since 1792 and the term "unorganized" militia is termed in its place that under the new Militia act places this "unorganized" militia with the National Guard. US citizens are no longer required to be trained and every person in the USA is a militiaman by definition.

You apparently don't understand the writing of the 2nd amendment. A review of this decision might help, but if you don't get the "shall not be infringed part", I feel I may be informing you in vain. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_of_Columbia_v._Heller#Decision

But, back to the OP - it seems like you just don't believe "the rights of the minority are not subject to a popular vote."

Exactly. I'm genuinely interested in other opinions that should come along shortly.

Exactly! The one thing that annoys me the most in politics is inconsistency like that, where you'll get someone who makes lofty statements and only means them in very specific circumstances.

Did Alexander Hamilton die in a well regulated militia duel? Was he armed with a well regulated militia pistol? Seeing that one of the Founders' privately owned firearms and used it in a duel sort of shoots holes in the whole 'well regulated' myth...

When has anyone ever taken a marriage into a school and kill people with it?

So you encourage the idea that people with a criminal disposition to violence should be allowed to own a gun without any training or understanding in it? I'm all for people being allowed to own a gun as long as they have been tested, and regulated.

I understand the writing in 2nd Amendment just fine, I just simply believe that weapons that have the potential to slaughter innocent people should be regulated. We already infringe on the second amendment by limiting the sale of Fully Automatic weapons. Why can't we regulate and confirm that we can't sell guns to the criminally insane and rapists?

Much like how a black man's rights were not taken away, he could still marry a woman, it just had to be a woman of the same race.

Great, now where we can start screening backgrounds and training people? Because quite frankly too many crazy people have gotten their hands on guns as of late.

The Heller case is based upon interpretations by contemporary judges, whereas Hamilton himself signed the Constitution, he was a Founder, his ownership of firearms and being involved in a duel without any 'well regulated' hoopla is far greater evidence of the Founders' intent, lest we say Hamilton didn't fully grasp the Founders' intent...

Much like how a free black man couldn't own a gun: the KKK began as a gun control organization. Just like gun grabbers want to say which gun the people can own and which they can't.

Yep. As a military guy, I know what it is to be trained and personally vetted; so that I can be TRUSTED with my life and that of others.

Some of my fellow citizens annoy me; they THINK that just ANYONE should be allowed to hold an instrument/tool with the serious potential to EFFICIENTLY maim, cripple, cause great suffering and kill many... without some effective checks and balances in place. To me, that is INSANE.

I'm not buying the BS that those who all but worship the status quo are trying to sell.

False, they actually started as a vigilante group. What are you going to say next, the Justice League and the Avengers are after your guns too?

Except people in favor of gun control are not practicing racism. We only want to make guns to either be unobtainable to criminals.

Regardless to the fact, people don't choose to be homosexual, and they don't choose who they fall in love with. While people do choose to become gun owners. All I am simply suggesting is that we should stop treating guns like toys and acknowledge they're weapons and treat them accordingly.
