Until Trump uttered that “on both sides” remark, no elected official (other than maybe Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms, or Bull Connor, had ever even hinted that there might be very fine people amongst the skinheads and klan types.

Trump didn’t get around to condemning the perpetrators until three days later.
