It is still a crime in Turkey to defame the name and reputation of Turkey, and talking about the Armenian genocide AS AN OFFICAL POLICY OF THE TURKISH GOVERNMENT OF THE TIME has, and does, fall under the definition of that crime. Try reading the following for some enlightenment.

I promise you, when you write really by caring Genosides, not like politicians, i ll be first member support you.

But again i say, I am aganist a law like in France parlementary made... It is out of democracy.Otherwise if an Armenian writes here that Turks made Genoside i can understand. The problem here i can't see Armenians who suffered from Genoside, i see Europeans. European states are, without doubth much more imperialist than Turkish state and signed to big Genosides and you are writing here like politicians they try to use these tragedies for discrimination as a gun aganist Turkey, how i can support this event? Sarkozy and France can't teach Turkey the history before they face with theirs.

GrimReaper has right to reject it, how he has to respect my ideas i have to respect to his ideas too. How i find many of your comments rashistic however if there is not a provocation for violance attack and to kill, i have to respect yours too... To send GrimReaper prison for his ideas is out of democracy. I am not a liberal however as a liberal you have to know it much more better than me...

The Armenian Genocide did happen, but it's the citizens of France who should be demanding this bill is thrown out.

It flies in the face of free speech -- as do laws against the denial of the Holocaust.

Denying something shouldn't be punishable, unless you're talking about perjury.

The difference is that Turkey still tries to deny it committed its genocide against the Armenians. What European genocides have occurred that have anywhere near the same level of denial by its people and government as is the case in Turkey? Give me a couple of examples and maybe your argument has some validity; without such examples, it is just hollow posturing Haydar.

They deny it, because there was no genocide. Research the Armenian "Genocide" , and you will find out what really happened.

The Armenians fought against Turkey during WW1, Turkey simply fought back. The numbers of this myth are extremely exaggerated. It's just propaganda. More Turkish Muslims were killed during this "Armenian Genocide"...

Making it illegal to deny such a thing, and therefore prevent Turks from defending themselves against false accusations is a joke...

    Hey Guys,

I m not sure if the genocide happened or not, but I would rather vote in favor I guess. Anyways I feel there are two different problems at hand which need to be discussed.
First, the question is if making this law about a war crime which happened over 100 years ago is worth threatening contemporary French Turkish relations. After all, it should not be the start of a new conflict after all! I am in favor of reconciliation, and as a German I very much aware when it comes to genocide topics, but at the same time I consider myself a realpolitiker. And as such I m not in favor of this law. This means I support the law in itself, but I dont support it in the current political context! This is a very important differentiation we have to make.

Second, it limits the freedom of speech of everyone with a different opinion and as such should be invalid anyways. There are other means to convince people that the genocide happened and as educated people we should use dialogue to achieve this goal.

For those who are interested: under www.facebook.com/icd.berlin you can find two interviews, one of the Turkish foreign minister one of the Armenian lobbyist to the USA. They nicely show both sides of the debate and I found them quite useful.

    1) can you post something from here "www.facebook.com/icd.berlin"

    2) you are a marginal, and not loyal to your own state , which has recognized Armenian genocide

So, in addition to being an Islamist, you're a denier.

You really are in the wrong country.

    Irrelevant.

What kind of Nation allows Government to squash historical debate by law? History is not something that is set in concrete, and laws like this do nothing except squash debate and draw conclusions that are essentially written in stone and cannot be changed.

It is wrong to do so. From a free speech point of view, and from a historical study point of view.

The Role of Government should never be to decide historical fact. This is the moral equivalent of the USA outlawing "9/11 truth" and attempting to levy fines and jailtime against truthers.

How about we just nuke Ankara and call the slate even? We wouldn't bug Turkey about the Armenian Genocide any more and it would be Turkey's turn to feel sorry for needless suffering and mass murder. It's a win-win solution!

Maybe they couldn't "nuke" as you desired; but the Tashnaks have already done it for you, the ASALA wanted to keep it going but they couldn't have done it all, so the Armenian forces completed the job in Khojaly.

I never quite understood how a country that the government controls every mosque in the country is a secular one.

Yes. Incarcerating people for denying history is an abuse of civil rights in itself.

I seriously doubt that France denies the atrocities committed by colonization. You should also understand that killing people in an attempt to conquer a country by submission, is not the same as systematically trying to eradicate a race or group of people.

this bill has nothing to do with "historical debate", please feel free go to university(even French one) then choose Armenian Genocide as your scientific subject and no one will ask you what are you doing, or call police ...

It has plenty to do with it.

Imagine a French scholar publishes a book or an article questioning the historical "fact" of the episode enshrined in Law by the French Government? Regardless of scholarly proof he could go to prison. What if he questions that the event in fact does not qualify as a genocide?

    He goes to prison.

How is that Free Speech? Sounds like tyranny to me.

nothing will happen., but if a French scholar gets $ form a Turkish fond (with connections to the local ultra nationalists) then publishes a book or an article about "Armenian conspiracy".... that evil and greedy behavior is gonna cost him money or freedom .

Turkey changed the working permission law...(it will be like EU)

After 1st of february with many other immigrants, 100.000 Armenian immigrants who are working of the record in Turkey, will move to their country.

Turkey will stop the offical communication with Armenia which was already little. And Turkey will join to Azerbaijan more, on strategy of the isolation of Armenia. Poor Armenian will become poorer between Turkey and Azerbaijan.

The trend of ''to face what happened in Ottoman Era to Armenians will be stoped.''

Probably Turkish parlements will bring a law for punishment for Algerian Genoside denial.

Turkey will reject the French companies in all military purchasings and the state projects. And will minimaze the cooperation specially for a possible operation to Syria, Turkey will not allow useage of the land for a military operation.

Big Companies in Turkey such as Renault factory will loose capital.

The Main Question Will Europe help Armenia to broke this starvation?
Will France accept these 100.000 imigrants which Turkey was accepting before?

I am Turkish and this punishment law doesn't have any value for me and didn't helped anybody accept to punish people who shares their ideas. If I was Armenian it would be the same for me...

Ohh! 1 income for Sarkozy, he will take some extra votes in next elections but unfortunately it will not be enough, he ll loose the elections as one of the worst president of France...
