I'm confused - why the hell are the police involved? It is a speech matter.

 

I am also confused. Does a school really think they have the right to control what students do while away from school? I would think that if the school does punish them harshly the kids could possibly be set for life by an easily winnable lawsuit.

 

If the police so much as have a chat to him I would instantly go silent, contact a lawyer, and sue them for harassment. This is protected speech. They have no grounds for any sort of investigation.

 

Seems lots of assumptions are going on here. Spelling out all the capital letters comes out as: BNYGGERPR. Is that really a racial slur?

 

Hopefully the kids will learn the lesson: Say it, forget it. Write it, regret it. The police and "severs punishment" is just for the schools image.

If what they do outside of school effects the inside of the school, the schools have that right (or more specifically, that power/responsibility). Students are children and really don't have much in the way of free speech rights.

 

A Prom is usually a school sponsored event.

Students most definitely have the right to free speech. 8f schools really had the power that you say why aren't they not allowing kids that have been caught selling are doing drugs to still come to school. The fact that you think free speech even speech that I don't agree with limited scares me.

Police harasses black people for things like, driving a car.
So they might as well harass white people for making racist slurs.
