Unarmed Naked 18 Year Old College Freshmen Shot and Killed By Local Police

Based on the story---sounds to me like non-lethal action would have been irresponsible. The last thing needed was a crazie, naked zombie person with a cops nose in his mouth shooting the cops gun willy nilly.

 

Really, we can't assume that the officer had a safe campus to send a bullet flying across.

I understand. We don't know if the officer had any other options available, and if a person suddenly attacks you, your ability to try other things is likely diminished.

 

My self defense training was fairly specific. I can draw my pistol with the intention of shooting to kill. That's it. If the situation didn't merit that, it's on me. No shooting to wound, no warning shots, nothing but shooting for business.

Plenty of people have had an illness crop up, bad food or someone deliberately stick drugs in their drink and end up killed by police when they didn't "immediately comply" with police orders they probably didn't even comprehend or were unable to comply with.

The police deal with the worst we have and become very jaded but there is no way a naked man is a threat that requires a gun to solve the problem. A tap in the right place with the night stick will solve the probelm..

Bill, listen to me. Those officers likely got a call of a naked man acting crazy. They likely figured it was doper and sent a whole lot of troops. Your article has a station officer going outside to check a noise and being attacked by himself. Big difference. We don't even know if the officer had all of his equipment. And even if he did, a sudden violent attack doesn't allow for a lot of time to formulate a plan. This isn't a classroom exercise.

Feck sake...do you know about handcuff training? Mace? Tasers (which I don't agree with, btw)? Nightsticks? Police officers are trained to restrain. It's their job to restrain the town drunk without killing him, particularly if he's some kid on the sauce for the first time.

 

Exactly. This is something even the smallest of small town cops might have to deal with. Dealing with some town drunk...or in this case probably just some kid who dropped too much acid. And doing it without getting anyone killed.

It's such a basic task for a police officer that it is stunning how poorly this was handled. It says the officer retreated several times. If he had time to retreat he had time to call for backup. And with backup this could have been solved completely non lethally.

A lot of the kid's friends have said this is a very uncommon action for this kid. He's not a druggie and didn't have much of a criminal record. He was just a kid who probably made the wrong experiment.

This is akin to a firefighter getting a cat out of a tree with a firehose.

for what it's worth, while taser use seems to have exploded, more than just City of Detroit won't allow police the use of batons or Mag-lights that take a battery larger than AA.

 

You charge police and threaten them for NO REASON, you deserve to be shot. Killed? Not if you don't harm them, but in the leg at least. Then again, when you don't kill deranged people, they sue you for shooting them when they attack you. Aren't lawyers the bestest=)

This thread and the video both involve an assault and battery upon a police officer, not a shoot at first sight operation like Obama's drone war on US citizens.
