“Pseudo-intellectual dreck Marx produced” You made my day with that. Sadly, academia at this point in history is drowning in pseudo-intellectual dreck. Recently given the opportunity to read a number of grad & post grad thesis in sociology, politics, philosophy and an M BA one I was close to slashing my wrists . In particular I found the M BA. stuff noxious beyond belief. The ability of that discipline to torture the English language into prolix gibberish is unparalleled. And we’re now seeing M BA’s appointed as University deans. As that old Hungarian saying warns us “The fish rots from the head down”.
I’m unfamiliar with the protocol-socialists so have now added Winstanley et al to my reading list. In my dotage that might not be a good idea. I’m finding of late the American obsession of categorising every shade of ideology as either ‘free-enterprise’ or ‘communism’ makes discussing such matters in forums like this tedious beyond belief. I’m tired of being categorised as a ‘leftist’ because I don’t worship every word Any Rand penned. Even confessing I admire her epistemology isn’t enough for the ideological puritans around here.
Thanks for the clue about photo-socialists.
    Now back to the music.

LOL - I know exactly what you're talking about and your point about "the ability of that discipline to torture the English language into prolix gibberish is unparalleled" is so painfully and hilariously true. It reminds me of the line out of "Psycho Killer" by the Talking Heads: You're talking a lot, but you're not saying anything.

I'm not sure you're going to find many books on the proto-socialists, especially Babeuf and la société des égaux (unless you speak and read French) even though both were important figures during their countries' respective civil wars and revolutions. Of the two, I find Winstanley and the Diggers more interesting precisely because they are more complex and difficult to categorize than Babeuf and his 'conspirators'. If nothing else, the Wikipedia articles about Winstanley & Co. are worth a quick read:

    The Diggers (or True Levellers)
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diggers

    Gerrard Winstanley
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerrard_Winstanley

As for Babeuf, he was quite a different and certainly more dangerous character who professed his willingness to kill millions if that is what it took to achieve his revolutionary ends, and it's that kind of extremism that helped earn him a date with the National Razor during the French Revolution. In that psychopathic respect he was little different than Jean-Baptiste Carrier who carried out some of the worst excesses in the Vendée during the Reign of Terror (e.g. the drownings at Nantes):

    François-Noël Babeuf
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/François-Noël_Babeuf

Personally, I'm more interested in the two men from a historical rather than a political perspective. Karl Marx gets all the credit for being the father of socialism/communism but Winstanley and Babeuf are the ones who deserve that title and unlike Marx, who was little more than a bum who mooched of an admiring and more intellectually capable Engels, they took great personal risks to earn that distinction.

By the way, love the Monty Python. :D

    Nice.

I can't help but be reminded of the organ work in "Awaken" that Rick Wakeman performed on the church organ in St. Martin's church in Vevey, Switzerland...
