If you could change anything you wanted about America, including how many guns are currently out there, what would your version of a perfect gun law be?

It's a golden horn unicorn, it does not exist. The moment gun powder/accelerent was discovered the genie was out of the bottle.

Reminds me of wanting a secure border with prohibition aka the war on drugs being law of the land.

    An "idealists wet dream".

If anything was going to happen, it would have been after sandyhook.

There is no such thing as a "perfect law".

    Perfect law.
    No violent criminal record.
    No mental health impairments.
Two hours twice a week for 6 weeks training in use and storage of firearms for small capacity weapons. Renewable every ten years. Like drivers licenses additional training required for larger capacity weapons.
Insurance against theft. Not to pay you but to pay the victims of crimes involving your gun. If you don't report your gun as stolen then your insurance company off the hook and you pay the penalty. If you don't store your guns securely your insurance will skyrocket. If you don't have insurance and your gun used in a crime you pay the victims, heavily.

Do this and I don't care how many or what capacity weapons you own. In you're willing to take responsibility have at it.

There can never be a "perfect" gun law. By its very nature, it would discriminate against someone.

I like this. I personally would add a provision as well (since we can do whatever and eliminate all the guns currently out there) that would prevent any large capacity firearms. Long guns, shotguns, and revolvers only. Revolvers only for carry, and shotguns and long guns can only be used for home defense + hunting.

It's "your version" of a perfect law. Not "everyone's version" of a perfect law.

Not to worry, criminals throw away guns that have been used. Existing guns not properly stored will be out of circulation fairly quickly.

If it was "perfect", it would have to be "perfect" for everyone.

I explained why no such law is possible. I will "move on" when I choose to move on.

I agree. With proper penalties, certain guns will slowly fade away. Ideally in this "perfect scenario" we could also eliminate the manufacture of said guns in our country which would dramatically lower the amount too if not completely eliminate.

I also think it would be interesting to deep dive into other countries that allow certain firearms but have virtually no crime associate with said possession. What do they do differently? What could be adapted in our perfect scenario?

Did I miss the part that covers the criminals and their rules?

This is a "perfect scenario" question - so we eliminated all the current fire arms in our country and redrafted laws.

    The perfect gun law:
    - Guarantees criminals will never commit a crime with a gun
    - Does not restrict the rights of the law abiding

Population density, cultural differences, attraction to violence, racial divide, drug dependency, gangs ethnicity/ghettos/territorial.

Take a look at our choice of movie genre, the more the violence the bigger the box office take.. Take a look at our video game choices, the more graphic the violent content the bigger the sales.

American love to watch and interact with others in violent settings.. Americans have been baptized in the waters of violence since the colonization, radio, silver screen, television and now digital in all its glory ;)

There's no such thing as a perfect anything.

But I think having everyone who wishes to possess a firearm be trained in safety.
Like those who want to hunt in many states need to pass a hunter's safety program before they can purchase a hunters license.

    IMO, conceal carry is dangerous.

If a law isn't agreed upon, it can't be perfect.
But then, there's nothing ever that's perfect.

I don't care to research it per state because regardless it still doesn't effect or consider the criminals..
