I feel this is very much relevant to the abortion issue. I was just wondering those who support abotion when do they believe their life began?.

My life began in the 14th century, as a butterfly.

Without meaning to sound facetious, as I do believe this is a very good question, my honest answer is:

    I don't remember.

So, did I exist before my recallable memories? Not to me. But others tell me that I did. So I guess it is up to others to determine when I started existing as an independent life-form. Following this observation, such a determination in relation to an unborn child or foetus must be solely objective.

I have no idea. I believe in reincarnation and the endless cycling of souls so I may have started off way back at the beginning of time for all I know.

If I'm not here to ponder that question then life never really began at all. But to answer your question I could only say it began when I was aware that I was alive, which was when I had my first memories at about 3 or 4 years old. I actually had life before that but it wasn't apparent to myself but would've been perceived by others I suppose. So to them I existed but to myself I dinnit. I suppose we don't really live unless there are others there to mirror our experience. I really don't see what any of this has to do with abortion or abotion. :blankstare:

Yes you did exist. Subconcious emotional memories were formed in the limbic system of the brain. This is why babies can still be traumatised by things that happened in early life that they do not conciously remember later (such as emotional deprivation or pain).

Even if your entire memory was totally wiped clean, it in no way would mean that you did not exist before. Or to phrase it differently, even if you as a baby was a completely different person from who you are now, this in no way implies that babies do not possess conciousness.

Depends how do you define life (exact definition of life is still eluding us). Life on Earth is an unbroken chain that began 3,5 billion years ago. Life of an individual organism again depends on the exact definition of individual organism. You could argue that your life began when gametes (which are biologically alive) from which you developed were created by the parent organisms. Or you can argue that it began at conception, when they joined, or at implantation, or at segmentation. I think creation of gametes or conception are most logical.

But I dont think this question is very relevant to the abortion issue, the relevant question is when personhood begins, and what is it that makes us persons worthy of protection. I dont think its mere biological life, hence the question when it begins is not important for me.

We can obsereve when a new lifeform has been created, we can observe when someones life began. I am just asking when do people who support abotrtion believe their life began. It is not up for debate it is known when your life began, I am simply interested in the responses. I alos never said anything about an independant life-form, I am asking a straightforward question when did your life begin. I am not asking if you recall when it began I am asking when do you believe it began.

Well we know that a baby is still living within the womb. We know from science we are living before then. But if you choose to ignore the facts and you believe that fair enough.

Well we know this to be wrong bacteia are living and we have no reason to believe bacteria has memories. I am not asking when you had memories or when you recall being alive but when you actually believe your life began. I think it has alot to do with abortion, if they can tell me when their life began you can then show them how precious this life is.

So inside the womb is the baby living or dead?.
Because we know the baby is alive, regardless if they are inside or outside the womb.

YOUR paricaular life when did it begin?.
A human sememn or a human egg alone canonot ever become a person. Once a human semen and a human egg come together a brand new life form has developed this life form is us.

I think it is relevant to the issue of abortion. If someones life begins at conception then you are killing someone if you abort this life.
Also personhood is a question that is quite arbitary and vague. Some who support abotrion claim personhood is when there is self awareness, however new born babies do not yet have self awarness. So are they considered persons?. Some people who support abortion say it is not a person till the brain is developed. This is to say the more your brain is developed then the more of a person you are, which is complete nonesense because a 5 year old would still be considered less of a person than a 16 year old as their brain has not developed as much?.

People who support abortion seem to make up the criteria as they go along. When they are beaten in one argument then they change the criteria and when they are beaten again they change again, and even sometimes revert back to their original position.

There is nothing coherent in someone who supports abortion point of view they jump back and forward from one position to another. The only thing they agree on is they should be permitted to kill the unborn, why?. They themselves cannot give any logical explaniation. The moment you catch them out in one line of thought they jump to something else.

It is either they are not a person because of where they are located (in the womb).
Or they are not a person because they have not yet developed certain aspects.
Or they are not yet a person because of their lack of capabilites.
Anyone of these claims is easy to refute the only thing is when someone who supports abortion is pinned down and their rational argument becomes not so rational they will jump to something else, they will all of a sudden change the criteria again.

I was alive, but still dependent on my mother's organs. My own separate life hadn't begun.

Yes, but they're kept alive by the woman's organs. If the woman dies while before they have been born, they die.

Gametes are alive, and different from the parent organism. The fact that they often do not become a person is as much relevant as the fact that majority of fertilised eggs also do not become a person, but spontaneously abort.

I did not ask you if you were dependant or not, for all I know you could still be in some dependant on others. I asked you when your life began. I appreciate that you acknowledge your life began in the womb. So if your mother had an abortion your life would have ended in the womb. So someones life is being killed during an abortion.

So now you are saying it depends on whether a child can use their own organs or not.
Why are you using this criteria?.
A child is still dependant even after it is born.
Not in every case when the mother dies the baby will also.

A gamete canot become a person. A fertilised egg is a person. Gamete male or female maybe a new lifefrom but it still not a person or capable on it's own without fusion of ever being a person. A fertilised egg is a person, you were once a fertilised egg as was I.

    spiritual of physical?

if Physical, then when you mix the ingredients together

the beginning of backing a cake is when you gather the ingredients together, but that is only the beginning IF you actually make a cake, if you toss the ingredients in the trash, they never become a cake

same would be true of person-hood, conception is only the beginning IF you actually become a person.

or the creation of the sperm and egg, ect... without which you never become a person in the current shell you occupy called a body, you move on to another

the real question is when do you (spiritual) enter your shell called a body and do you just move on to the next available shell if the fist one doesn't become a person
