Even if the USA completely stopped all immigration, hispanic women just churn out so many babies! But let us have an objective look at the numbers:

Between 2000 and 2010, the Hispanic population grew by 15,171,776, accounting for 56 percent of the overall overall growth in the USA. There were 50,477,594 Hispanics as of April 1, 2010. The 10-year growth rate for Hispanics was 43 percent, compared to less than 5 percent for non-Hispanics.

There are 17,130,891 Hispanic children, accounting for 23.1 percent of the people in the USA under 18 years of age.

Between 2000 to 2010, the number of Hispanic children grew by 4.8 million while the number of non-Hispanic White children shrank by 4.3 million. The demographics of children today are generally a very accurate reflection of what the future population will be.

The fertility rate for women of Hispanic origin was 97.5 live births per 1,000 women aged 15-44 years, which is 50 percent higher than the rate for non-Hispanic women. For women of Mexican origin the rate was 112.3 per 1,000. (National Center for Health Statistics, most recent statistics collected in 1981 )

In several large cities in the USA, white people are already a minority.

The facts are irrefutable. The question is: what will be the effects on white people when they become a minority? Will they suffer a similar fate to that of the whites in South Africa? (the South African government forced the whites to sell 40% of their corporate stock at prices greatly below the market value to the blacks)

President Nelson Mandela's government backed a plan in which black South Africans will gradually need to constitute 69 percent of the workforce at all levels of mangagement in the companies. "The first thing that you have to do is take people out. That is never an easy thing", Macozoma told CNN. About 800,000 out of an earlier total population of 4 million whites have left South Africa since 1995. One South African woman explained, "If we stay here they will kill us. You can’t say this was a dream, or rewind what happened. They want our land." since the election of Nelson Mandela in 1994, farmers’ organisations say 3,000 whites in rural areas have been killed. Even the South African Human Rights Commission, set up by Mandela’s government, says at least 2,500 farmers have been killed (in virtually all the cases it was white farmers killed by black attackers) and admits "The lack of prosecutions indicates the criminal justice system is not operating effectively to protect victims in farming communities and to ensure the rule of law is upheld."

Relax. You'd be hard pressed to find a 3rd generation immigrant who can speak with their grandparents in their original language. Plus, no Mexican-American really wants to live like they're in Mexico. They identify with it as long as they're in the U.S. If you've ever seen a Mexican-American in Mexico it is hilarious. No one comes to America to be an American. American culture is not attractive to most people any more. They come here for other reasons. Presumably most come for economic reasons.

In the past assimilation was an ideal that utlimately compelled those who came, or their progeny, to become American.

The ideal of assimilation is no longer operative. It has been replaced by multiculturalism where the newcomer is accommodated and permitted to remain separate. Besides, the influx from Mexico and Central America is never going to stop. Thus, an entirely new nation is being formed within the ambit of America.

Mexicans can maintain the culture and practices they love and have enjoyed and known in their homeland. Coming here allows them to do so, but with an improved standard of living.

I live in a transition neighborhood with many Mexicans, including large numbers of illegals. They have recreated Mexico.

I'm just curious to know what spurred this sudden boom for illegals to cross the border and make a living here. Did some law or statue pass over the past 10 years that I was too young to recall?

Its been going on for more than 10 years.

Legalization programs of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA), under which about two million formerly undocumented Mexicans acquired legal status. And some others.

Ross Perot said NAFTA would create a mass migration into the US.

Jobs at one time (when the unemployment rate was 3% or 4%.

Once they got there foot in the door there was no stopping them. Pro-immigration organizations manipulated many laws and constitutional rights of America.

Then you have the politicians like Ted Kennedy that pushed for more immigration into the US.

Bottom line. The people who are pro-immigration have made it a point to use them as a tool for themselves. Politicians use them for votes. Businesses use them for cheap labor.Legal Mexicans/Hispanics/Latinos use them as protest media.

The crazy part is most people know that if you entice a Mexican with just about anything from a beer and burrito to amnesty they will jump threw hoops.

In summary, since 2004 migration from Mexico to the United States has accelerated rapidly to the point where about nine percent of the population born in Mexico is now living in the United States.
