I wouldn't even put him in the realm of good physicist. When was the last time he published a major discovery? He hasn't published anything major since his 74 and 75 papers on black hole radiation which was stolen.
It depends on the science, but mostly they are respected bureaucrats who produce tons of papers that nobody reads afterwards. Probably this is less true for biology and chemistry but very much true for economics and other social sciences.

Yea, pay attention to what he said... The guy thinks if aliens exist they would kill us, hence he has stated in the past since we're NOT dead that they don't exist... I saw him say it in a documentary a few months ago and was baffled by his logic...
There are two different types of genius, those that imagine then see if the numbers fit their imagined ideas, and those that look at the equation and then base their ideas off their theorem.
