What information I have was in that TGA report. I know the “user interface” which was the main screen would shut down unexpectedly but no one could determine if it was doing it in response to a nearby mobile phone! However early mobile phones and earlier models of ventilators WERE incompatible. Losing all your access to the data about what is happening to your patient is not something you want to happen at any point let alone while they are connected to life support

But it is not just the machines themselves it is also the circuits, the filters, the humidifier chambers the suction apparatus, and most essentially the expertise to run them!

Dang. Are other medical devices still sensitive to cell phones? Still seems odd they can’t or won’t rectify whatever the problem is. If other ventilators aren’t shutting down it shouldn’t be that difficult to figure out. I thought I read in one of your links or maybe it was in my search, that the same hardware (older model) was working fine until a software update in the new model.

I agree wholeheartedly on the expertise of the operators. If any new manufacturer were to design their own ventilator I would want a lot of input from medical professionals who have to operate them. Overall, how good is the medical device industry at soliciting advice/input from users? I’ve noticed more attention to that side of the equation in the ag industry recently. It’s definitely a positive for everyone in my opinion.

There is no place on earth, never has been, never will be, cannot possibly be such a place, were all men are equal.

I cannot possibly be equal to Bill Gates. He is many times smarter than me, and thus he has accrued a fortune, and I have not. Almost all doors are open to Gates, very few are open to me. And that's the way it should be.

The research I have done, and I admit it was a couple of years ago now, stated that there was no way that they could prevent cell phones from interfering with medical equipment - which is why many hospitals ask you NOT to use them at the bedside.

Unfortunately no one is actually talking to nurses, doctors yes, nurses no.....

Mind you we are our own worst enemies in that we do not speak up often enough and our academics seem to go full theoretical as soon as they leave the bedside with the result that bedside care is very very under researched

Thanks. That’s interesting. I suppose it’s definitely a case of better to be safe than sorry.

I’m not surprised on the doctor vs nurse dynamic. But it’s disappointing. I’m not around the healthcare industry much, but from what I’ve seen doctors seem to think they know more about the nurse’s job than they actually do, especially in relation to devices etc. In my opinion the people going hands on daily with any type of device are the ones with the most potential to improve the device.

Good stuff, thanks for answering my questions.

You are probably smarter than Bill Gates in a lot of things. He is just more successful in some areas that you are not interested in.

Naw man, the unequal outcomes show that Gates is many times smarter than me and deserves much more than me. He was born with the right stuff and I was not. That is how nature works.

I found this interesting after the discussion on automobile manufacturers and ventilators. A freaking vacuum cleaner company does the design in ten days.
