Both. They are on the payroll of the pharmaceutical lobby.

Both. That is obvious. They are looking out for Big Pharma, as evidenced by the Princeton Study, which showed only particular groups or people get represented in DC...and it isn't the average American.

Sorry, I couldn't vote in the poll, because it's not that simple at all!

The main organized opposition to the legalization of marijuana right now comes from anybody who makes money from ILLEGAL marijuana! Now, ask yourself who THAT might include.... See? It's got nothing to do with politics, per se, really....

Sure, there are a few 'social-conservative' right-wing groups who oppose MJ, just like they oppose alcohol, state lotteries, legalized gambling casinos, dancing in pubic, and anything else that they find offensive. There's really very few of these people left anymore. No, the big opposition comes from all these people, inside and outside the United States, who make a BUCK off of keeping marijuana illegal....

International narcotics treaties we are signees and ratified so they hold the same weight as the US Constitution bans the official normalization of this drug, a government can decriminalize it but can't encourage it with laws taxing it and so forth at the Federal level. States doing so are technically in violation of Federal Law this is one reason in Colorado no drug earnings from the industry can go into banks and similar options since the money is gained illegally. We could withdraw from said treaties or move to change them however since we pushed the treaties and they are ratified it would be difficult to do.

How does this poll not have an option for the FDA? The FDA just reconsidered marijuana, and decided it still needs to be classified the same as black tar heroin. That department is ran by, and almost entirely staffed by, complete mouth breathing morons, with no understanding of any science, let alone biology.

I've never heard anyone say that taxing something is encouraging it.

Taxation legitimizes it and further must be paid and drug money is all cash since no bank in the world is allowed lawfully to move it, what are they supposed to do hand over trucks of cash to the IRS and let them illegally move it into banks, its still known narcotics money. Therefore a violation of treaties which is as important as our US Constitution legally and in the Federal Courts. Medical marijuana might be permissible if under FDA guidelines as a narcotic medication and isn't likely to be challenged but recreational drugs but any other use is very much something that under our treaties with other nations needs to be dealt with. The States legalizing it are breaking serious laws and cannot trump the US Constitutional level of our treaty commitments.

I don't know. Alcohol and cigarettes are far worse drugs. Maybe there is no one to line the politicians' pockets in the "marijuana industry."

That treaty is called the "Single Convention Treaty on Narcotic Drugs", ratified in 1961. While it's true that all international treaties are incorporated into the Constitution under the Supremacy Clause, it is a clear violation of and inconsistent with the Bill of Rights, more specifically the 9th and 10th Amendments.

    http://www.tokeofthetown.com/2011/03/50th_anniversary_of_treaty_outlawing_cannabis_worl.php/

The US government had no authority under the Constitution to orchestrate or be a signatory to this draconian treaty.

Both. That said, a few months ago, my local Republican Congressman (and a downstate Democrat Congressman) co-sponsored a bill to reschedule Marijuana to a Schedule III drug, so it can be legally prescribed federally.

No one western mainstream party will stop effectively consume of marijuana ( too corrupt, bribed by drug cartels)
Only Jesus and Holy Bible can really stop drug consume.

But, thanks for your daily injection of ignorance.

Well, both. For the people who own them do not want it legal. Like Big Pharma, the alcohol industry and the elites who own both, along with the private prison corporations, and others who get paid to arrest users or to defend them in court.

Was that a cut and paste from the "Progressive Party" (aka Bull Moose Party) platform during America's progressive era ?

There are wings of both parties that are in favor of legalizing pot and others who oppose it.

I'd also say both parties along with law enforcement which gets $$$$ for abatement.

Nothing happens in a bottle. If you legalize pot, the business community will protect itself.

Drug testing is already in place for many jobs requiring trust. If you fail the test, no job. This can spread to all segments of the US economy which will lower the cost of testing and make drug testing pervasive.

Unless potheads are content to spend the rest of their lives pushing a broom, they'd better think about their futures before they light up.

    BTW:

Some on this site have mentioned well-known successful people who smoke pot. Don't kid yourselves. You are not in their league.

With money, comes privilege. They can buy their way out of drug issues in many ways.

Those who live paycheck to paycheck and who lose their jobs do to dope will find it almost impossible to replace that job with another one without references and drugs tests.

They will easily find themselves cleaning toilets with the other druggies.

    Happy dreams.
