Look at the US political class. They are a laughing stock. A total embarrassment. No normal person admires or respects US politicians. Yet how did these corrupt embarrassments get into power in the first place? By being elected of course. Elected by millions of American voters. So if American voters keep voting for liars and crooks and clowns, then doesn't that make American voters stupid as hell?

You think voting is some sort of magic bullet? It's simple really. Generally speaking only semi narcissistic and aggressive people are willing to fight hard enough and long enough and become ethically corrupt enough -- by a system pretty much designed to promote corruption -- to win and hold onto political office in the first place. and thus such people tend to remain in that pattern thereafter. When those are basically the only types on offer either you vote for the most -- as far as you can tell -- competent ****** among the crown of A-Holes or you vote for some wishy-washy non party candidate who realistically doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hades of winning.

I go with your last option. I refuse to lower my values and beliefs to vote for someone not fit to run for office of the most powerful position in the World. Too bad you Trumpies threw your standards and morals in the garbage.

I think US voting patterns are proof of American collective insanity and stupidity. Stop voting for these <Rule 9> clowns. Vote based on principles. And stop rationalizing this horrible situation with appeals to pragmatism when the results are the opposite of pragmatic.

But you don't get it, Trump wanted to make America great again and it was Hillarys birth right. LOL

I definitely do not get it. Because while Americans try to justify their behavior with appeals to pragmatism, the results are anything but pragmatic. Instead, we get a total <Rule 9> year after year. There is nothing pragmatic about the way the US political system operates, so appeals to pragmatism are entirely chimerical.

So when a person refuses to lower his values and not vote, and then complains about everything that went wrong are they then in reality trading in their values for hypocrisy or do the two work in a tandem?

I also find it amazing that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are somehow considered the "realistic" candidates despite being total <Rule 9> clowns. What does that say about the US political system, when two of the most unserious and disliked people in the country are viewed as the only "realistic" options?

Long story short, the 2 parties have developed rules for elections that make it impossible for a 3rd party to compete with them.

Do election rules prevent Americans from educating themselves and voting for good people?

Not at all, but good people dont run for office, because. . . They are good people and wont put their friends and family through an election.

Look at the 2016 election for a perfect example. Trump got elected by left leaning moderates that were willing to put up with him over electing Clinton.

Good people don't run for office because stupid Americans won't vote for them if they do.

The results speak for themselves. Congress is full of vile creatures put there by American voters.

I agree. If you have some great idea to get good people to run, regardless of ideology, I will happily vote for them.

I do agree with this for the most part.

Another Ross Perot type could pull it off I think.

I believe it was after Perot that the 2 parties changed the rules again to make it even harder. I'm too tired to research right now, but I believe they upped the percentage needed for debates, and changed the way a 3rd party could fund raise.

I keep voting Republican because I’m 80% conservative and 20% libertarian. The Republican Party is closest to my values and beliefs.

I think its fair to say that part of it is on the American electorate to close the political education gap and learn more about who they vote for. But I also believe that that's far from the main cause for corrupt, ineffective, incompetent, and widely disliked politicians getting and perpetually staying in office. The real issues here are systemic... That is to say, that it is the system we use to elect politicians which leads us to these undesirable outcomes.

Gerrymandering for instance is a portion of the problem and deserves a mention here (as does Campaign Finance). There are several decent solutions to gerrymandering which could be implemented and of which I think we should all commit to discussing with more frequency and pushing our representatives to support...

...That said, I believe the majority of the issue stems from the fact that we continue to use Plurality Voting Methods for our various elections... when we need to be dumping such things into the grand cosmic trash-bin of history and replacing them with systems that can actually meet our collective decision making needs, namely... Ranked Voting systems such as Instant Runoff or Ranked Pairs.

Many of America's founders already had lots of good ideas about how to organize political society. Americans are just too stupid and self-absorbed to notice.

Funny how the Republican party has done nothing but grow government and increase the debt the entire time they've been in government.

Changing the structure of the system can only happen if Americans vote for the right people. So, again, it simply comes down to Americans being stupid.
