SO recently, I had someone send me a private message...

this person is someone who I responded to several of their messages, making exceptionally well made points, that defeated the argument they were making... and after enough response rejecting my statements (I don't want folks to think I believe everything I say is factual, its both factual and opinions mixed together quite often), this person demanded I show them proof to back up my claims... "proof its its not true"... you know, that instant rejection anytime you dare challenge someone, they automatically deny and spin into the political stereotyping...

so I gathered some data... of course the first google results are almost ALWAYS biased news sources, for either side, its just the reality of using key words to search for a topic, you change one word in that search phrase, I guarantee your sources and data will often adjust slightly... thats half the problem with the internet, "facts" to prove it either way right... so I finally was able to spend a couple hours digging through government data sources, and pull the actual numbers done by the Obama administration on this topic...

I present the data, from the persons own political party... countering the points and beliefs they had... then things go silent as I await a response... I figure the person just didn't want to discuss it anymore, or had nothing to counter with to support their beliefs anymore... so I let the topic die and that was the end of that conversation... but it seems I must have been responding to this person on other threads... and they finally send me the message above...

why do people "ignore" other people... is it to hide responses that clearly show they are wrong, and they can continue to live in a little bubble without ever expanding their minds? is that really what people are doing on this website? because the more I seem to counter and make statements that clearly demonstrate a solid point, I see less and less names responding to posts, that almost ALWAYS responded to my postings in disagreement... are people slowly dividing into like-minded groups? unable to see any responses from others that disagree?

or am I missing how the whole "ignore" thing works on this website? I've never sent this person a private message, so I wouldn't have any clue why "ignoring" me would mean something, other than perhaps they are ignoring my responses to their messages???

someone fill me in... whats ignore do? whats it actually block? are people really dividing into like-minded bubbles?

I've only put one person on ignore, and it was someone who was stalking me. They followed me here from another forum. Other people have told me that they've put me on ignore, but hey, that's their loss!

People can put others in ignore for any reason they want I suppose. I don't think I have anybody on ignore, or at least nobody that posts anymore since I do not see any messages grayed out. Personally, I think if someone has you on ignore then they shouldn't be allowed to PM you either, but I don't own the site or design software. That someone has me on ignore would not stop me from replying to their posts if I so desired.

Ignore is what you do to the trolls who are more noise than signal. Basically, if you ignore somebody, you don't see their posts. I am a conservative, and I have both left and right wing people on ignore. Nothing to do with like-mindedness, but with whether or not I can stand their drivel any longer. It's a nice feature.

Why do people put others on "ignore"...

Speaking for myself, life's too short for stupid, and the older I get, the less patience I have for stupid. The same people post the same stupid (*)(*)(*)(*), post after post after post, and all they do is waste bandwidth and irritate people. I have a LOT of people on this forum on ignore.

The real question is why do people keep responding to people with whom they don't agree? Stop feeding the trolls, for God's Sake! I know there are those who think it's cute or entertaining to bait, but it's a total waste of everyone's time reading the same crap day after day.

A disagreement is one thing but the constant poking and prodding gets soooooooooooooooo old. I have a lot of people with whom I DO agree on ignore, too, because all they do is bait and feed.

Stop it! Stop the useless arguing back and forth. It's not amusing.

I never use it. I am adult enough to ignore those who are annoying and scroll right past posts that are idiotic. They may one day say something sensible and I wouldn't want to miss it just because most of their posts are annoying or stupid.

well I would think thats how an ignore would work, since this person ignored me they wouldn't see me or I wouldn't see them... but somehow this person must see that I am still responding to their posts, to write me a private message telling me they ignored me and clearly don't want me responding to them...

I just wonder why someone would come to a political website that is all about challenging each others opinions and data to arrive at a solution or at the very least an honest and open discussion with both sides able to chime in... but it seems people want to come to a website like this, and then slowly regress into a little bubble of like minded people... why bother coming here at all then...

I'm not sure if its a matter of, they can't stand my postings, which could be true... or they can't stand me proving their opinions and data wrong... it could be either, my ego wants to say I destroyed them and thats why they want to ignore me, but the logic in me says, I just might be an abrasive jerk... heh...

They would see your post blocked out. It doesn't make your existence unknown, just your content. That is how it is on most forums at least.

I guess that too depends. I am more interested in challenging my own opinions. You are all just props in the macabre Shakespearean tragedies and comedies that go on in my head ;)

Interesting. I usually read it as the person is a control freak who cannot stand that the person being blocked is beyond their control (but again, that may be just one of the plot points in the aforesaid comedies and tragedies)

No, you're not on Ignore. I must confess, however, that I thought most forums appreciate new members and mods don't need to clear forum memberships with you. Am I correct, jimmymo?

I'm also pleased to hear your high opinion of yourself remains unchained.

Staying on topic, I've always felt that putting people on Ignore is for cowards. Same with people who run away from forums because they can't discuss topics civilly.

I used to ask that same question until, after being here for a while, I noticed some would always blatantly ignore what I posted and just use it to continue on with their monolithic memes. I always want to address posts I disagree with but after seeing that some don't want to hear what I have to say, it's just easier for me to ignore them.

This does not mean that everyone that I ignore stays on my ignore list though. I will remove some from my ignore list to see if they have matured beyond propaganda and name calling.

There are a very few members I ignore because replying to them is a waste of time but I do not have them on my Ignore List. I do have only one person on my list to prevent me from accidentally reading her hateful posts.

When a member puts another member on ignore, all posts from that member are hidden behind an ignore message. Also, the member who has been placed on ignore cannot PM the other member. I used the ignore feature some years ago and this is how I remember it.

I only ignore idiot spammers (i haven't had to add anyone on this forum I'm happy to say). Ignoring people just because they disagree with me defeats the purpose of being on political forums.

yeah I'm starting to see the obnoxious...

I see people who are ripping apart someones ideas and suggestions, and trying to turn an innocent conversation into an intense "my side versus yours, I win" screaming match... when the persona originally was just throwing ideas out there to discuss and see if they couldn't come up with a solution... but it seems people feel compelled to chime in and make it about their political party, rather than to solve a problem both agree on...

this place is becoming less and less desirable as the days go on... I just started a nice conversation with some other folks, and others seem to chime in just to scream "you're wrong you're wrong" rather than add information and ideas to push it further along... this is getting annoying quick...

I only block people if they obsfucate or if they get personal.

Even if their point of view very much personally upsets me, I still don't block them.

Debating is the point of these forums. I don't bother anymore. I disagree and then leave it now days but that just puts me out of the forum game.

It's funny when it comes to politics I just consult the Bill of Rights... I have personal politics but I rarely state my personal opinion on an issue.. My whole philosophy is "is this even legal?"..

The posters here aren't too bad tho..
