Let us start by looking at the leading figure 43% of American women will have an abortion - that is nearly half - surely they cannot ALL be "foolish"

    http://womensissues.about.com/od/reproductiverights/a/AbortionReasons.htm

    Are these "frivolous" reasons?

all you will receive are opinions

IMHO those top 3 reasons are nothing more than selfishness but it comes as no surprise what the top 3 reasons are.

So missy, why are we killing your baby today? Oh, I'm going on a cruise in 3 months and want to look good in my bikini

And is American womanhood so shallow that almost 50% think that way?

Why do women have abortions? Because men can't.

The answer to your question is "yes" when referencing the 43 percent who get abortions primarily for the reasons mentioned above. Besides, arguments implying that statistics--which show a "majority" or "high numbers" of people believing something or acting in some way--justify their beliefs or actions is the argumentum ad populum, more commonly referred to as the appeal to majority logical fallacy. It is a logically invalid argument.

I really have trouble with that statistic. It doesn't seem realistic.

Most women opt for abortion because they know its a life-changing event a huge responsibility and they don't want to deal with it. They want the "problem" to go away.

    many reasons,

some are not ready to bring a baby into this world

some were raped or have health concerns

some fear rejection from those that would attack them for not getting married, ect...

many reasons, probably as many reasons as some have for having a child

some have a child because they want to raise a child

some have a child for selfish reasons

some have a child to try to keep a man or get to his money, ect...

many reasons, too many to list...

Are we trivialising what to them is a very significant impact

Sorry but I do not buy that women are saying to themselves "Gee with 43% of American women having abortions perhaps I should too"

It is not that the number is encouraging but that it exists in that amount

What does this even mean? You'll have to be more specific.

Frivilous. Why are you engaging in irresponsible sexual activity if you cannot handle the consequences? Grow up.

So 43% of American women have to just "grow up"?

And you are assuming that it is because of the woman's failure to find economic security that is the cause of being unable to afford to continue the pregnancy - what if it is the failure of the male?

I think these reasons are surely frivolous from the point of view of someone who considers foetus a person deserving of right to life. Yet I dont (unless it is late-term), so I dont care what the reason is. In fact, to abort a foetus because of financial problems or relationship problems is a moral act, it shows that the mother is responsible and chose to wait until she is ready for parenthood.

    Of course not .
No reason is frivolous if the person concerned believes it .

Probably many given reasons mask true reasons .

Hmmm - must be funny place this America where women, who are genetically hard wired to nurture, have abortions rather than look after Nasty ,messy things are too time consuming

Are you not trivialising what might be to the woman a life and death situation?

Check it out . Think you will find this is not the case , and it is very difficult for women who do not feel this --- guilt , shame , let alone fear of family or public condemnation.
Many women take a decision never to have kids under any circumstances but mistakes can and do happen . And so on .
I am doing the opposite from trivialising matters . I am suggesting that the total scenarios are huge numerically and stereotyping women ( born to nurture , for example) can do terrible damage .

It isn't trivial. And if they acquired a disease from sex---I'd expect them to get rid of it.

But human life isn't a disease-and I see human life as more important then a woman or man evading the consequences of their actions.

So are we trivilizing human life?

Why do women get pregnant? It's not like birth control is hard to get, expensive, or difficult to use.

Now, foolish is out of the question. That's simply not politically correct. So, why do women get pregnant? I don't think women are too stupid to use birth control. It's not that difficult. So, why don't they? Wait, maybe I'm asking the wrong question. Why should they bother, might be the better question?

    So, immaturity and selfishness...lol.

People who cannot deal with the consequences of their actions are immature.

Those who realize the consequences but look the other way are selfish.

That is what I just read.

You are trivializing a woman's life if you think a one-celled zygote is equal to her.

No...if the woman's life was in danger--then I would choose the woman. Though she might choose the human life within her.

You are giving more value to the one-celled zygote. Why does a one-celled zygote have more value to you than an established human being?

we are not discussing cells here. We are discussing human life and the snuffing out of human life.
