Why must the POTUS be "natural born?"

    You're assuming that a "German born" president wouldn't have been vetted by the electoral process. My question is, and is in this case, why can't a German govern the United States, as long as that German takes an oath to govern without reference to their country of birth?

    Or do we risk electing natural born Presidents who are politically ineffectective? As we have just done.

    Loyalty is more then a pledge. It's a feeling. And true feeling can arise in moments of conflicts and stress. We don't want to elect a president who may feel divided loyalties. Pretty simple concept. You don't seem to agree, so I think further explanation is pointless.

    It seems that you are really agitating for someone you have in mind to run for President, otherwise it's hard to understand out of a nation of 320 million people, you need to open the pool even further. OK, are you a Cruz fan or something?

    Well, suppose you had someone who was French and moved to the U.S. when they were 30. Then they became an American citizen when they were 35, and ran for president when they were 45. There would be a question whether this person was solely loyal to the U.S.

    A loyalty oath? Isn't that what citizenship is all about?

    A person with dual citizenship must presumably take a loyalty oath to each country with which he has citizenship. So the question remains, how can one be loyal to 2 different countries/governments?

    If one must eventually abandon one for the other, which one does he abandon?
