Right. So, the first thing we can do is say with very strong conviction that it had nothing to do with Colbert's support of gay marriage. How do we know this? Because in the 2008 race, an openly gay democrat lost against a much stronger candidate by a far slimmer margin. Ergo, it's not homosexuality that made the difference. That's a pretty easy first step in the analysis of why Colbert lost.

How about you do your own (*)(*)(*)(*)ing research? If homosexuality was such a big issue, exit polls should show it. And if they did, you'd have something to offer in your OP, other than "this is what I believe, for no good reason". I mean, hell, it's not unthinkable that in 4 years, an entire district makes homosexuality a 6-plus-point-swing issue. But you're basically saying, "I believe that Colbert lost because she supported gay marriage, despite all the evidence to the contrary and with no supporting evidence." And if that feels stupid to you, it's because it really, really is.
