I appreciate that. I think that was when each party began looking for payback. I also think the Hastert Rule had a lot to do with the current situation. That was followed up with Reid's nuclear option use. Think back, Daschle and Lott, Mitchell and Dole, none of them would have resorted to the nuclear option. Then again back then there was respect between the two leaders and they would work something out. Compromise and the game of give and take were still very viable option. Of course partisanship wasn't at a all time high either.

Lots have changed over the last 30 years or so. Not for the better, at least politically.

The 1990's was when Gingrich introduced the politics of personal destruction. It went downhill from there to the point where the extremist rightwing fringe element employed it against the moderate Republicans in the GOP in order to "primary" them out of their seats in Congress.
