"In 2008, then-candidate Barack Obama promised that he would “eliminate North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.” His campaign manifesto, Change We Can Believe In, described Obama’s North Korea policy, and the philosophy behind it, in great detail:

North Korea is an example where direct, tough diplomacy that lays out clear choices to rogue regimes for good and bad behavior can lead to change. When the United States was engaged, the pace of Pyongyang’s development of nuclear weapons was slowed; when we were not, it quickened. While there has been some promising progress, it’s important that all of North Korea’s claims are verified. If they are not, we should move quickly to reimpose sanctions that have been waived, and consider new restrictions going forward. As President, Barack Obama will work with diligence and determination with our friends and allied to end the threat of North Korea and to secure a lasting peace on the Korean peninsula.

Obama’s pledge to use “tough diplomacy” to “end the threat of North Korea” followed his infamous pledge during a Democratic presidential primary debate in 2007 that he would meet the leaders of rogue regimes like North Korea “without preconditions.”

That thinking matches the pseudo-realist view expressed repeatedly by Obama’s new nominee for Secretary of Defense, former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE)--that the danger of regimes such as Iran and North Korea is amplified by, or even caused by, U.S. failure to “engage.” Obama’s extreme self-confidence emboldened his campaign promise not just to contain North Korea, but to convince it to abandon nuclear weapons entirely.

Obama did not just leave such talk on the campaign trail. In his 2010 State of the Union address, Obama boasted of the success of his policy on North Korea:

Now, these diplomatic efforts have also strengthened our hand in dealing with those nations that insist on violating international agreements in pursuit of nuclear weapons. That's why North Korea now faces increased isolation, and stronger sanctions--sanctions that are being vigorously enforced.

He repeated the North Korea boast in his 2011 State of the Union address:

Because of a diplomatic effort to insist that Iran meet its obligations, the Iranian government now faces tougher sanctions, tighter sanctions than ever before. And on the Korean Peninsula, we stand with our ally South Korea, and insist that North Korea keeps its commitment to abandon nuclear weapons. (Applause.)

Yet today, on the day he is to give the first State of the Union address of his second term, North Korea has tested a nuclear bomb. Not only has Obama failed to “eliminate” the North Korean nuclear weapons program; he has also failed to discourage or deter it.

So much for “tough diplomacy” from the Obama administration."

Yep so much for Obama's tough talk, Korea sets off it's biggest nuke test today. So what will Obama have to say about his "successful" policy to end Korea's nuclear program in his SOTU speech tonight? What excuses will he make..........BUSH!

I guess that was when Obama thought he had a blank check to buy 'em off.

I think Obama really did, at one point, believe that just being him would be enough to win the world over. He's had dopey white people fawning over him for as long as he can remember, trying desperately to gain his approval in order to ameliorate their own white guilt, so he got used to being admired wherever he went. It didn't happen. Although it seems plausible that Obama really is on the side of the colonized countries and is doing everything he can to harm the colonizer countries, which is what "Dreams From (His) Father" is all about.

Don't worry guys, we've already sent them a fresh round of condemnation, and if they step out of line again, we'll have more condemnation packaged and ready to go. No country can handle such a repeated barrage of harsh rhetoric for so long. They'll literally and figuratively buckle under the weight of it. Poor bastards. I almost feel sorry for them.

Might I suggest an air campaign to coincide with our usual verbal tactics, designed to drop millions of small, biodegradable and eco-friendly pamphlets on N Korea, spreading word of our displeasure through every crack and crevice of that mud pit country of theirs? Granted, such extreme measures might be highly provocative, and we definitely woldn't want to do any provoking *shudder*, but hey, no one can say we haven't been pushed to the limit here.

Obama is interested in transforming America, not in protecting it.

North Korean Test Brings Iran Closer To Its Own Test...
    :confusion:
North Korea and Iran – partners in nuclear and missile programs
February 12, 2013, There is full awareness in Washington and Jerusalem that the North Korean nuclear test conducted Tuesday, Feb. 12, brings Iran that much closer to conducting a test of its own. A completed bomb or warhead are not necessary for an underground nuclear test; a device which an aircraft or missile can carry is enough.

I really don't see why this broken promise should be any different from the dozens of others like: close GITMO.....cut deficit in half by the end of first term......

Hmm, I wonder why the US government isn't raving on about possible war with North Korea like they are about possible war with Iran? After all, North Korea has plutonium while Iran only has uranium. I wonder if it has to do with North Korea not having as many exploitative resources? Naaaahhh :roflol:

In any case, I'm not really all that worried about North Korea's Nuclear program. The USA has the most powerful military force in the world. If they wanted to do something about it, it's fully in their power to do so. Not that they necessarily will. And not to say I would be rooting for them if they did! I just hope North Korea doesn't bomb New York. They should choose a better target if they really want to bomb us.

In any case, the USA, being the only country that has ever actually dropped a nuclear bomb on any other country, is not exactly in any position to be tough on foreign nuclear power, not without being hypocritical at least.

So, campaign rhetoric aside, just what do we do about North Korea?
Attack it militarily and risk a confrontation with China?
Continue to impose sanctions that only increase the suffering of the unfortunate subjects of that regime, without actually affecting the leaders at all?
Send a drone to take out Kim Jung Un and his cohorts?
Make a deal with China to get them to rein in their little sidekick?
Continue to leap and hoot, burying them in threats, hype, and rhetoric that they will ignore?

Seems to me there is no simple solution to the problem caused by the North Korean regime.

I also remember George Bush's idiotic invitation to "bring it on", aimed at the 'Axle of Elvis' or whatever stupid buzz phrase his advisors invented for him.

We have been trying to eliminate NK nuclear program since Bush Sr was President. All promised, in one way or another, to eliminate them, but NK has still been developing them for their own reasons. From the Agreed Framework to the 6 Party Talks to sending warships to Japan, NK will do what it wants it to do no matter who says what.

Exactly. You can throw as much provocative rhetoric as you like at an unstable and belligerent nuclear power, but beyond that any military action can only end very badly. For everyone concerned.

I don't actually recall that. But then, that may be because I didn't expect it to happen.

We already know that bullying, sabre rattling and threats don't work.

That was the Bush adminstration's policy.

Which is why North Korea restarted its program and built its first bomb.

I realize that bluster and threats are the only things the parochial conservatives in the US ever seem to understand. We've seen the entire cabal of ex Bush adminstration foreign policy hacks busy rattling their sabres on Fox Noise. Of course, they have credibility in the right wing alternative reality.

Remember when George W Bush ignored North Korea so they could start a nuclear weapons program?

Another example of whining because President Obama hasn't cleaned up Dubya's mess.
