Well, I told them that making newbies wait before they are allowed to post is one thing that would discourage a lot of people from posting here. They will just find another forum where they don't have to wait to post. And I mentioned the slowness in navigation. Even if they don't take the advice, they can at least acknowledge it after asking for input?

This is a very common and useful "Bot" protection function and extremely effective SPAM block. It has been studied and used for years because it is so effective. Those few who do decide the small inconvenience to be not worth it are probably people they will not miss.

This is the only site I've ever been a member of that does that.

    Tecoyah is correct.

Several of the sites where I have participated do not do that...

...and are filled each morning with spam.

Well, that is also going to discourage new users is what I'm saying. They will sign up at a site where they don't have to wait to post.

I came here...had the posting delay.

    Glad I stayed.

I guess some will not have the patience...but so be it.

The spam at some of the places where I was...is horrible. Fifty to a hundred posts every morning. Some very cleverly done...so you had to check them out.

I understand your feelings on this, but I think the positive from the short wait out-weighs the negative.

This site has as many negatives as many of the others (kinda the nature of these places) but on average, I'm happy I am here.

My favorite was the defunct New York Times/Boston Globe ABUZZ. Open Salon was also decent...but that is gone also.

We have no way of knowing, obviously.

And a good many are deleted, to say nothing of the infractions issued.

Very few are deleted. So many pro Hillary and pro Trump posts remain (thousands) that the few that are deleted would have no significant effect on opinion. I've been warned and infracted but always for posting insults, never for my political perspective.

You may as well claim the mods can fly, so implausible is your allegation.

Well Heavens to Mergatroid, come to think of it, neither have I ever been warned by a mod not to be so right wing.

How could I ever have thought in a million years that PF staff was anything but unbiased as the wind-driven snow?

And what allegation would that be, pray tell?

I used to post on Comcast message boards a few years back. That got closed down too. I loved that message board.

I don't have any complaints about moderation here. They are pretty good and fair, IMO. I've been on another board where the moderators were . . . well ********s. :D The moderators here all seem nice and pretty laid back.

We pay them off in booze and the company of high class call girls each month. My guess is that did not happen on your other board.

    Just a couple of comments:

The Rules have grown over the years, and esp #3 which is purely subjective and can be influenced by a Mod's ideology. Most likely 50% of the posts on here could be considered as flame bait!

I was a Mod on a social website many years ago and the only things we worried about were: personal threats, stalking, vulgarity (b4 filters), pornography, etc. Serious offenses.

And 'thread derailing' often is related to sidebars, esp when a thread has run its course and been 'beaten to death,' and is just spiced up and given some life!

Often the members get the feeling that PF is a 'police state!'

During a recent thread about Hillary's fall during a 911 ceremony, the posts came hot & heavy, much digging, but no threats only some harmless humor, and a Mod had to come in with a "wet blanket" and kill the action. Wasn't necessary as 'all' were just having fun...dont know if there is a rule against 'fun' but will look it up!

And recently, a good poster came back after a yr away and has PF on 'test' to see if things have 'changed.' I have left on sabbaticals also when gotten dinged for minor crap (altho on this site almost 15 yrs and never Banned!), such as friendly jousting with another poster, and gotten fed up.

I would suggest that getting "Donations' would be much easier if the overall atmosphere became a little more 'graceful' and not run like a police state! Just sayin.......

If you want to see what an unmoderated forum looks like visit Stormfront. I think the owner of PF wants to keep this one out of the sewer.

I believe there is such as thing as "over-moderated." Can write a Rules book that will rival Moses Deuteronomy!

As the old saying goes, "You can be right or be happy" (rarely both)

The current server platform is based on older, less efficient, database software and probably requires more frequent reindexing and a larger RAM cache to accomodate the growth in thread content and members. Yes, you are right that those things do cost more.

PF is both the most active and highest ranked political forum per the Alexa rankings. That accounts for why the server is slower here because it is dealing with more user traffic and higher volumes of data than other political forums.

And the difference in the overall level of civil discourse is striking as a result of this screening IMO.
