Actually there are a few states that still do not impose property taxes, making (small parts of) America the only place in the world where average joe can still 'own' land.

Just because I havnt moved to one of those states (that have their own authoritarian issues) doesnt mean I dont have the right to call out property taxes for what they are- a rental scheme to empower the govt (and the corporate interests that call the shots) over the people.

You may call out anything you like. I don't want to pay for the new carrier battle group. We don't need it. But I pay my taxes. So this idea that we can't use taxes to pay for socialized medicine is ridiculous

I don't think that SCOTUS is able to create new Federal agencies.

But that gets us off-topic. We're wondering if it's a right. So, you definition of "right" is "anything given to individuals either by the United States Congress or United States Supreme Court."

I don't think that whether or not anything is a "right" is a very interesting question under that definition. I think that questions like "Is healthcare a right" are attempts to cut nearer to basic political principles.

But there are further problems with your definition. Wouldn't this make things like public jobs "rights?" For example, if someone is hired to be an administrator for some government bureaucracy is that a "right?" Sure sounds like it is pursuant to your definition. This raises some obvious problems with the Fourteenth Amendment, as many of us are being denied our right to work as a government administrator or military general.

I didnt say 'cant', I called it unconstitutional. I called it slavery. I backed up those personally imposed definitions with my reasoning.

You invited me to leave the country for it...

Everyone has the right to apply for a government job absent compelling interest. Perfect example.

I feel like you keep focusing on the least important part of my post.

But just to be clear, you do think that each and every government post is a "right" to the holder, pursuant to it being the result of a bill from the legislature?

No. Everyone has the right to apply for a government job and keep it absent compelling interest.

Okay, so not every benefit resultant of a legislative bill is a "right." So what is the further distinguishing factor between things like healthcare and government jobs? Obviously we're introducing some second variable which entails right-ness.

    Um, no.

To summarize- my position is that being forced to provide goods and services to others (in an albeit limited fashion) is slavery (or limited slavery) which fits with the technical definition of the term.

You justify it with what amounts to 'well we're already enslaved in other ways, so its ok.'

Be a slave if you want, but don't be the 'house slave' that helps the master keep ur brothers in line for extra scraps from the masters table. Nobody likes the 'house slave.'

Because too many have been taught to be leeches, and don't care that they don't understand that 'rights' aren't things taken from the pockets of other people.

I suppose the way to address this is from the providers standpoint. Its an ethical imperative to rescue a life if it is within ones power at no danger to ones self, but its not a legal imperative. So it's technically not a right.

As far as it being a privilege, thats tricky too. Most medicine involves triage, which places the use of medicine to those who can derive the best use of it. In a disaster situation where there are multiple victims that means you take care of those closest to dying who have the best chance of surviving before you take care of anyone else. Those who will live even if they have to wait awhile, and those who will most likely die regardless of care, are left to wait (or die). This does imply a certain sense of privilege with those who get medical care.

But... if the privilege is based solely on ability to pay it certainly takes a lot of the honor, and ethical grounding, out of the medical profession.

This could not be further from the truth. Your statement reflects a total detachment from reality.

Out of one side of the mouth, liberals are saying that healthcare is a right, but out of the other side of the mouth, they are claiming that people over a certain age should not be allowed to waste resources.

If you go to a medical facility with a legitimate life threatening injury or condition, they are legally required to try to save you life.

Would that mean that it would be legitimate for you to enslave someone to provide you healthcare?
