At the Federal Level, politicians don't spend "our money". They decide how much of your money to take and use to prevent inflation.

Depends on how you planned to accomplish that feat.

If you taxed away the dollars from the private sector in order to repay the debt would simply swap Treasuries for cash. All the cash in circulation at that point would have been created via a private banking debt. If the government were to maintain a state of zero debt all spending would be balanced with taxes and no net new government dollars would be created. As people repaid their private debt the number of dollars in circulation would slowly decline as the supply of settlement funds needed to run the banking system would be inadequate. Thus no new loans could be made.

So we are supposed to tolerate a government that wants to tax us to death as they foolishly blow the tax money?? Do you realize how much the federal government spends in just ONE week? Look it up if you dare.

I dare say I'm aware of more fact and figures about government spending than most people.

But so what? Every dollar the government spends is earned as an income by someone. Do you think that if the government spent less money people would make the same amount of money? No, every dollar the government "saves" is a dollar not earned by someone because of the accounting fact that spending=income.

Not at all. I just am against them raising taxes on anyone until they get their spending under control and are more accountable for what they are doing with the tax monies.

US Budget in 1 Week: $73,221,917,808
    For the year 2011:

    - The US Government spends $73,221,917,808 (~$73 billion, 221 million) per week (both portions)
    - Of the total money shown above, the US Government borrows $31,547,945,205 (31 billion, 547 million) each week-- shown on the right portion.

You can say Booyakashaa when this is your weekly allowance.

So then, this isn't about how much is spent, but how it's spent.

Chris, let me ask you a question....

Do you think the government can create US dollars?

    The government spent $73.221 billion.

And people in the US private sector earned $73.221 billion as income. Those people use that income to buy homes, cars, groceries, clothing, and people earning salaries and wages providing those services.

Spending is income. If you spend less (all other things being equal) and people will make less. If they make less that affects demand, demand affects employment, rinse and repeat.

You act as if the government spending is valid and necessary, as if the government is "honest" or something. There is SO MUCH corruption going on behind the scenes.

I'm not for the raising of taxes, personally. I'm just going to be one of the few people to tell you that everything you think you know about government spending is based on an era that ended in 1974 with the adoption of the fiat standard and the end of gold backed money. Now it's not your fault. They don't teach this stuff in school. It's only in the last 10 years that it's even been seriously debated in academic circles. But what you think you know about taxes, at the Federal level (the state level is different).

If you give me the opportunity I'd be happy to explain.

This has nothing to do with honesty. How dollars are spent is a political decision. I'm not on board with the way everything is done with respect to spending, I'm just trying to tell you that you need to separate how the money system works from what you'd like to achieve politically with when the government spends money.

    http://moneyminiblog.com/interesting/stupidest-things-u-s-government-spends-money-on/

    1. Unnecessary Printing ($930,000,000)
As a military member, I can see how we rack up close to a billion dollars printing things we don’t need. We kill a lot of trees to print a bunch of documents that nobody reads anyways.

    2. Vacant Buildings ($175,000,000)
Not building vacant buildings, maintaining them. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs spent this money to maintain hundreds of buildings that have been vacant for years. I can think of a few ways to use that many vacant buildings.

    3. Ghost Clinics ($35,000,000)
Millions of dollars were paid out to 118 “phantom” medical clinics. These were clinics, established by a network of criminal gangs, that never actually existed. They may have been fake clinics, but the government paid out real money and a lot of it.

    4. World of Warcraft ($3,000,000)
Calling all WOW players…yes that includes the closet players as well (we’re on to you). How would you like Uncle Sam to pay you to play WOW? Our tax dollars went to researchers at the University of California at Irvine to fund screen time on video games such as World of Warcraft. According to Sen. Tom Coburn’s report: Wastebook 2010, playing video games helps “organizations collaborate and compete more effectively in the global marketplace”.

    5. European Legislators ($2,600,000)
In 2011, the U.S. spent these millions on “parliamentary strengthening” in Eastern Europe. That basically means we taught them how to balance and follow a budget…now if we could just take a few notes for our own budget.

With all due respect, you really need to type out what you think they mean in the context of the conversation we're having. I can't debate the author of the story you posted and it's not fair to ask me to parse out what points you think are relevant and why you think they're relevant. Links should be used to provide evidence to a point you're your making.

Having said that, I'll look through it this time.

I JUST want the government to stop wasting tax payer money on stupid things, and they should not be able to raise taxes on anyone until they are more accountable for what they are spending and what they are spending it on.

Yes, you should read it. You will find that there is a "secret budget" that isn't made public of government spending as well.

Let's also not forget about the cronyism, where they will contract a company and allow them to charge an exorbitant fee for whatever service they are providing. These are "favors" for businesses/people who make big campaign donations. They get lots of favors from our politicians in return.

Then I don't understand what you were asking me. Can you rephrase your question?

What if the government kept spending but lowered your taxes, would that be better?

Again, you need to read it and put it in your own words.

Now I read it (actually I had already read it).

Where did the money for QE come from?

Why do you ignore all the posts I made about the stupid spending? Do you agree or disagree that the government spends money foolishly a lot of times? Do you agree or disagree that there is cronyism and corruption going on? Do I care if they just decide to print and/or "borrow" the money along with spending the taxpayer dollars? NO. I don't care. I care about getting this government cleaned up.
