Warfare that is open means its not worth fighting. Stealth in space is totally impossible. Even with current technology, we could detect a spacecraft drive firing outside the orbit of Neptune from Earth.
0_0. No joke? ****, maybe you're right and it doesn't get far off the ground but I'd been rooting for it as a kid lol.
Seriously. Space’s background temperature is at or only slightly above absolute zero. A spacecraft engine (at least any really high Delta-V one that could be used for sustainable interplanetary travel) is going to generate upwards of tens of millions of degrees. It would like being in a pitch black room and then turning on a million candlepower spot light.
Now I know why the pilots always wear those heavy jackets inside of a cockpit. If not for that, they'd probably incinerate from such heat and is another factor making a real-life sci-fi scenario is almost impossible.
Well, in Earth’s atmosphere, a pilot would have more to worry about from the cold at altitude than heat. Space is similar: in a shadow, absolute zero; in the sun’s light, rapidly heat up unless you have some means of radiating heat.
Thanks for taking the time to explain to a mid-20's dude on why his sci-fi fantasy is just that: A fantasy that likely will never come true, and hence the 'Space Force' is a stupid waste of US taxpayer dollars that likely won't go anywhere. Now that I think about it: In those sci-fi shows, the battles really never did have any stealth, so yeah, the stealth thing would be nonexistent.
The most realistic version of space combat I’ve ever seen in fiction is two spacecraft several million miles apart detect each other, Fire a flurry of nuclear-pumped x-ray laser tipped missiles at each other, then the ships’ AI takes over and starts firing the ship through a series of evasive maneuvers designed to evade the incoming missiles that are right on the edge of human survivability (IE, entire crew passes out, acceptable casualties from the maneuver alone are <25% of the crew). The side that wakes up to find they are still alive, wins.
Before flying was a thing, ignoring idiots once laughed at the idea of an Airforce. Airmen? "Hah! What a ridiculous notion." Its was only a matter of time. Technology improves. Space travel is becoming easier. It is only a matter of time When would be the right time to realize the offensive and defensive aspects of space and form a dedicated force to dominate it? If not now, when? The creation of the Airforce is what drove the development of better planes. Companies would make better and better airplanes by constantly trying to one up one another, competing for government contracts The same will happen with spaceforce. And we will dominate space. But its understandable how someone who is ignorant of space could overlook the vast utilities of it and laugh at a creation of a dedicated force in order to dominate it. As it stands right now, I cant see it going beyond expanding NORAD, making it into a stand alone force. Thats a realistic space force. After all, NORAD stands for North American Aerospace Defense Command.
To the average person ... This sounds stupid ... To the people who know the truth ... This is the smartest thing our government can do !
Well, first he will come up with a really cool uniform. Then all these obama loving trekkies will voluntarily load up on a rocket and be shot into space so they won't screw up America with their silly socialist ideas. I hear Bernie will be the ship's captain.
Since when is stealth in space impossible? How is that different from stealth at 48,000 feet? How long have you had this ability to accurately foresee all either technological developements? Tell me do you think the Pacific was not worth fighting in WW2?
Heat. It all comes down to heat. Spacecraft radiate it. Space behind them is near absolute zero. The heat stands out like a flare in a pitch black room. Stealth in space is impossible so long as the laws of physics exist.
I like the idea of sending us back to the moon, though I think Mars is a better goal. The idea of weapons in orbit is ****ing nightmare fuel and anyone who is ok with that doesn’t understand it, plain and simple.
Mars is nothing but a way to conducted extravagant and expensive assisted suicides until we develop far more improved orbital and trans-lunar infrastructure.
Developing a translunar infrastructure, whatever that’s supposed to be, does nothing to address the issues that will cause all of the “suicides” you are taking about. There’s also no reason on earth that we have to limit ourselves to doing just one thing at a time in space.
Sure, but how is that satellite defense. You do know B1 and B2 bombers and rudders and elevators and ailerons? They also have A2A missiles and electronic and other countermeasures and fighters to protect their flight paths.
And so do airplanes along with electromagnetic energy and with technology we have developed stealthy systems. Never say something is impossible.
Actually it does. Building an orbital “shipyard” in lunar orbit or at one of the Lagrange Points would allow us to assemble larger spacecraft that don’t have to worry about carrying payloads up Earth’s gravity well. They can use engines that would barely push them off the ground in atmosphere but are highly efficient and powerful in vacuum (for instance VASIMR). That cuts down the transit time to Mars from taking a year+ to taking a couple of months and means we can actually support a Mars mission without it being a guaranteed one way death sentence.
Destroying satellites requires that you hit them. It’s hard to hit something that is suddenly changing its orbital position and angle at speeds approaching 50,000 miles per hour. Try hitting a F-22 that suddenly threw on its afterburners with a BB gun except in space, you fought path isn’t governed by restrictions like aerodynamics and wind resistance so the F-22 in question can maneuver in three dimensions with zero predictability.
