'White Awake' group draws backlash at University of Maryland

I never said all conservatives think alike. I just suggested the kids at these colleges who are unsure how to speak to minorities might be victims of a certain southern upbringing that glorifies the confederacy and that could be leading to these confusing interactions they are having when they leave their Confederate bubbles. Quotes from conservatives on this board who glorify the confederacy don't do much to disprove this theory either.

What is he trying to suggest? He certainly hasn't said unequivocally that slave owners were bad guys and that the confederacy was evil.

He's the one who told me himself how proud he is of his Confederate ancestors.

 

And slavery was legal in the United States all through the war and even after it ended, do you deny that?

So as I said, the Southerns were fighting to protect the homes, their land and their families from invasion, why should then not be honored?

Because their homes, their land and their families were provided for on the backs of slaves. Do you honor muslims fighting in their home lands? Did you support the vietcong fighting us in their home lands? The Palestinians fighting in theirs? Does every country or group fighting an invading force deserve to be honored?

Out of curiosity, have you or anyone on the left ever criticized the people who captured and sold slaves or the black slave owners in this country and across the world? Slavery is what it is, but everyone needs to stop bashing white current day Americans for something they didn't do for which no one alive suffered from.

Those Dean Martin roasts are some of the funniest jokes on the planet. I go hysterical when I watch some of those guys. Have you ever seen Don Rickles roast Sammy Davis Jr..? It's 5 minutes of schtick that would probably get him sent to jail these days....

There was a time in this country when people could laugh at themselves. When humor was used in this manner to fight prejudice. You can see Rickles' genuine affection for Sammy and he shows that affection by telling those jokes.

These days it's all about safe spaces and coloring books.

 

Question, has the right ever answered a question about slavery without asking what about these people over here? As a liberal I will say everyone who helped or turned a blind eye to the injustices of slavery is human filth. Which conservative here will echo that sentiment?

The ancestors of the confederacy continued to abuse, murder, rape and deny blacks equal rights long after the end of slavery. There are plenty of people alive today who remember Jim Crow and segregation and a time when blacks did not have equal rights. Blacks have only had equal rights in this country for 54 years and still over 90% of southern congressmen voted to continue to deny them civil rights even in 1964. In 2017 the supreme court ruled that north Carolinas voter ID law discriminated against minorities with surgical precision. The only ones who want to stop talking about injustices today seem to be the ones excusing it in the past. Curious. But not really.

 

Morally superior?

So easy to judge now for what existed then, life through a different lens. You'll be scratching the Aztecs, the Mayans, the Egyptians, the Asians and a whole list of others from your list then, I'm sure. With no understanding of society then, history is an empty word for you.

 

My advice: look at who benefits. Yes Gentiles do and most likely will always dislike, distrust and malign we black people, but who benefits the most from such actions? Also, had we as a whole taken more ardent steps to build for ourselves, we would not be worried about what others think of us. Again, look at who has prospered the most from the evils visited upon Black people in this country. I know that most of us consider them friends, but come on now, with friends like them, who needs enemies? Just saying.

 

so-called Egyptians owned slaves? When, where and whom did they enslave? Surely you are not referring to Torah Tenach? If you are, I think that a history lesson is needed, and I am not going to be the teacher.

 

Really? You find it difficult to believe you're morally superior to a former slave holder? You almost sound like one of these uber liberals who think everyone should be celebrated for participating. Who's morally superior slave holders or abolitionists? Who knows it wouldn't be fair to sensitive whites to keep score.
