The last I had look the US crime rate in most catalogs had been dropping for generations even from the period when the US was great!!!
Even the liberal New Republic is discovering that the left as represented by the Democratic party has its own anti science biases. Try discussing things like IQ test results differences between groups divided by race or gender. Try talking about life in the womb. Etc. The attack upon the United States by the slave states in 1861 was, overwhelmingly, the action of Democrats of yesteryear. That was then. This is now. Currently, Black Americans seem well aware of the transformative reality, even if there are others who need to dwell in the past. The braying RINOs of Trumpery have now infested the GOP that had once spoken softly and carried a big stick, advocated free trade, and espoused conservative family values. Labels are fickle. Principles endure. "With malice toward none, with charity for all ..." 'I'M THE KING OF DEBT!"
Lincolns views are not exactly ones we would want to apply today. During his famous debates with Sen. Stephen Douglas, Lincoln explained to the crowd: “I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races … I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races from living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be a position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.” https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/did-lincoln-racism-equality-oppose/
Lincoln views change over the years and it was Booth being in the crowd when Lincoln stated that Blacks should have the vote who seal his fate. Hell there even a picture of Booth in that crowd listening to Lincoln at that moment in time.
I think it is best not to apply our current moral code to people in the past that existed under different moral codes. Many of the greatest minds of the past would consider us immoral deviants if they applied their standards to us.
Voting on emotion.... part of the reason politics is in the condition it is today. They may get the Democratic ladies, but not so much on the independents. Once again, it's the lesser of evils, and I'm sorry, but the Democrats screwed the pooch so badly this time.....
Do you not think that if there were an illegal dime to be found, the IRS wouldn't have been all over Trump?
Did you see the recent news story about how Trump and his Dad illegally moved their money around to avoid paying taxes? One of the big New York newspapers ran the story last week.
Do you think maybe Lincoln was saying those things to get elected? That he was playing to his audience?
The only references I've heard Republicans make to being the "Party of Lincoln" has been to use it as a slogan for dinner parties. In fact, they are often the first to criticize (and I think correctly so) Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus. The Republicans and Democrats of the Civil War have little to nothing to do with the parties of today.
Yes and no. I have little doubt he was honest about what he actually said there -- that he wasn't looking for full equality. The same could be said for many abolitionist. But you can be racist and still have a problem with slavery. Neo-Confederates like to trot out this line to claim that Lincoln wasn't actually against slavery (you'll notice, however, that's not actually what the quote says, and the rest of the debates made it clear he was against slavery); but I do think he was also trying to comfort Southerns who thought he was a threat to slavery. In the end, his attempts to assure them he wasn't a threat to slavery were unsuccessful and states began seceding primarily over that issue.
I believe Abraham Lincoln was one of the smartest politicians and best Presidents this country has ever had. No matter how he felt about Blacks personally, he knew the United States could not survive with slavery. Not only was it morally wrong, it gave the South an unfair economic advantage. I am glad he had the wisdom and insight that he had.
Question: Would a current day President be able to suspend habeas corpus like Lincoln did? Just curious.
Some one on PF modified that exquisitely - ""Republicans haven't seen Democrats this angry since yesterday".
Political parties have the purpose of gaining and maintaining political power. That is what they do. They try to live up to nothing. Their purpose is to win elections. Nothing else.
7 years? Lincoln never supported treating black slaves equal to whites. Had he said different the Northern states would never have elected him.
What convinced Booth to go ahead with his murder plots was hearing Lincoln stating that he was going to give Blacks the right to vote and once more there is a picture of this Lincoln speech with Booth in the crowd listening.
