Why not 16 just to make sure it does not happen at 14, then 12 to prevent 14, 10 to prevent 12....etc....you could eventually get to 1 to prevent 2.
20 weeks is roughly half the duration of a normal pregnancy. It's enough time to discover you're pregnant and consider your options but still bans abortions(except those for medical reasons and hopefully those situations where birth defects are discovered) for the other half of the pregnancy. It's a compromise. Personally, I don't think anyone has any business creating time limits at all, but I also realize that we are a nation of multiple opinions making compromise essential to the democratic process. It means neither side gets all of what they want. There is one exception in my position. If an abortion goes wrong and a child is born, that child is now an individual just like a child is after a normal birth. Abortion is no longer an option then, no matter what the mother intended, because the child is no longer a part of her body.
Oh, I suppose that makes it all ok then. Do you have any idea what a "fetus" at 20 weeks actually looks like and how far along in development it is?? It's kicking the mother.
Yup, abortion is all OK !! A 20 week fetus has done more to the woman it's in than kick her. All good enough reasons to abort it.
I could say the same dismissive thing in response to whichever cutoff, or lack thereof, you are in favor of. Do you have any idea how much that doesn't matter in the slightest because it changes nothing about why a woman should and does have a right to an abortion? A fetus kicking it's mother doesn't make it less a part of her body.
This speaks VOLUMES about the Pro-Choice position. Thanks for the honesty, at least. Many Pro-Choicers aren't willing to be that up front.
I'm a pro choice guy. I don't know what trimester is legal and what's illegal, so I can't answer when in pregnancy it should be illegal.
In most US states, the federal courts have said they will refuse to allow states to prosecute below 20 weeks. (Even though it's very dubious whether they have the power under the Constitution to do that) A few states have the limit set at 24 weeks. 2 states now have recently written laws that seem designed to allow abortions without limit, though the wording of the law does not actually explicitly state this. Even if you're pro-choice in general, it's possible to still be concerned elective abortions are happening so late.
Very few abortions percentagewise are actually truly medically necessary. In fact it's more common to abort because the baby has Down Syndrome.

And every Muslim is a terrorist, right? When you paint with too broad a brush you are bound to go outside the lines!!
FoxHastings said: ↑ So AGAIN an Anti-Choicers proves my contention that they are all about punishing women. You'll have to give me a post number so I can check the context. If it refers to the exceptions for rape and incest and a Anti-Chiocers supports that then yes, it is punishing women for having consensual sex.
I don't like any law interjected here. If the health care decision maker (the woman, her husband, or whomever) believes there is significant risk to the life of the mother, who from the government is to measure that risk and send the doctor to jail?
Or if they don't believe that but are just saying it to get the box checked off on a standard paperwork form so they can get the abortion. It's just a not-so-subtle loophole to allow late-term abortion, practically for any reason.
Uh, duh, DOCTORS are involved and they determine what the conditions are ...and then they give the most important person, the pregnant one, the CHOICE.

There was no hate in my post...just those SCARY facts ! The fetus does cause the woman harm and that is a good enough reason to abort it....no woman has to get an OK from you...
Anytime after first trimester. In any case of rape or incest, the woman can make the decision before the first trimester is over. If the baby has something wrong with it, technology will almost always show that by then. If the mother is on medication that she would have to stop, again, she can decide to abort before the first trimester ends. In the case of a surprise threat to the mother that occurs later than that, they would deliver the baby early.
. Most abortions are done between 12 and 18 weeks. Rape victims may have been injured , maybe even comatose, traumatized mentally, so NO limits should be put on them What if the medication keeps her alive....you still want it to stop? Only if it's viable.
