I think it has everything to do with patriotism. Sports figures make way more money playing for their teams than playing for their national teams. They make a lot of money if they win the world cup, of course. But, if it were for money, it would be a huge gamble.

Not quite. There is not a lot of money in women's soccer. However, now she is famous, a household name, which she was not previously. She will get all sorts of endorsement contracts. A lot more money than she would have ever gotten playing for a professional team.
