Here is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen:

We were keeping a very high-spirited black Arabian Stallion on our property, for some friends. I had been spending a little time with Luther while trying to get to know him. He was very skittish and slow to warm up. Then, one cold winter night, I believe it was late December, the air and sky was crystal clear after a storm had dumped about a foot of snow. It was close to midnight when I started back up to the house from my office. But I noticed Luther standing near the gate and I decided to spend a few minutes with him. I remember that it was very cold that night. But the moonlight was unusually bright. And with the new-fallen snow reflecting the light from all around, it was practically like daylight out in the pasture. Then, on a whim, I grabbed his harness and began to jog. He agreed to trot alongside me but only with that one big eye trained on me constantly.

Little by little I picked up the pace, which Luther seemed to like. We ran side by side, with only the sound of Luther taking deep breaths, and the sound of the snow crunching beneath our feet. As we ran we kicked up the light, bright white powder, which sparkled like diamonds in the moonlight at it fell. I was looking into his eye and he was looking into mine the entire time. And as we ran, I could feel myself connecting with this animal. It was a magical moment. It was a once-in-a-lifetime moment. And we ran as long as I could. We were buddies after that.

My Saturday Bikini Barista, Mmmmmm Mmmmmmmm Mmmmmmmm. She is about 24, with long blonde hair, a beautiful face and a sweet smile, tattoo free, with the body of a goddess. She's smart and taking pre-med classes. Each week she tells me about the latest in her classes and what she finds interesting. So far she's a straight-A student. But the classes are getting harder now and she is feeling more challenged. I know she was worried about her last test but she did great!

She is pure beauty, so delicate and supple, her shoe-string bikini reveals all but heaven and she isn't afraid to let a man appreciate that. She knows what I do and we have talked. She isn't interested in having a relationship but we have struck up a bit of a friendship.

While I'm not seeing anyone, she is my Saturday joy - my beauty fix.

I always think of the awe and majesty of the planet we live on when I think of beauty. There are certain places which are so wonderous and awe inspiring that words and photographs fail to capture the primal essence of the place. Looking over the rim of Crater Lake is something that can't be described or photographed. Standing at the Johnston Ridge Observatory and looking into the gaping maw of Mt. St. Helens is majestic and more than a little frightening. Going through a lava tube cave to find a hidden forest. (I won't tell you where that is because if anyone knew about it, it would be quickly ruined.) Hiking through the woods and finding a mossy spot next to a cool waterfall where you can stop and eat your lunch in almost complete silence. Those are the most beautiful things in the world to me.

that is a very good post, and thought provoking.

i prefer to visit those places on youtube because i do not like bug bites, and it is expensive to travel, and the cheap route at air b and b's is very bad in my opinion.

maybe a beach, with a beer, and country music is the best i can do for that sort of thing.

Make that a latte from my bikini barista. and some Pink Floyd... :D

I have a hypothesis: I suspect that my definition of physical beauty evolved on the beaches of Southern California. To this day, the classic hot blonde beach babe is my preference. Maybe being surrounded by hot blondes resulted in a preference for hot blondes. But then I have wondered if this is more a function of my genetics. My ancestry goes back to hot blondes - German, Swiss, Finnish...

I do wonder about the origins of our concept of beauty. On the most basic level is about the viability for successful reproduction - symmetry, which indicates a lack of deformations or genetic disorders, clear skin, healthy glow, the proper proportions for successful childbirth, youth, these are all cues that we perceive as beauty.

But on another level, blonde, brunette, or redhead, tall or short, round face or longer face, Ginger or Maryanne? What drives those desires? Why did I look into the eyes of my SB and see the most beautiful woman I had ever seen?

the people with Aryan ancestry are responsible for the western civilised world, not saying they are superior or inferior as that would be prejudiced.

they are genetically predisposed to be attracted to fellow conquistadors

you sir, come from good stock, and should be proud.

Something else I've wondered about: Is the perceived beauty of a song the same as the beauty of a sunset, in our minds? Is there something fundamentally common to both. Or are they literally different concepts of beauty and we just don't have the language to express that. And if that is the case, then why do we use the same word for all forms of beauty?

It seems to me that we assign the word "beauty" to describe all things that evoke the same emotional response.

We didn't really have the hard body scene back then; not in the mainstream. But a lot of the women at the beach were athletic - jogging, surfing, swimming, and/or beach volleyball.

When I was in my teens, I had to spend a lot of time at the beach lying on my stomach. Otherwise people would start using me as a sundial.

Running in the dry sand is a btch! I lived on the beach for a time down towards San Diego. If I wanted a really hard workout, I would run in the dry sand. THAT'S a killer. But so is trying to play volleyball in dry sand. Great workout! And super fun to watch the women play. :D

There are too many...for me most of them revolve around my children, animals and nature.. even moments can be beautiful, interactions, words...sounds..not music but water running over rocks.. the sounds and smells of the forest or the ocean...

We've got a bunch of milkweed growing on the wilder parts of our property and once in a while the Monarchs will migrate through here and it is kinda magical seeing all those butterflies around.

My wife planted a bed full of pink and purple Monarda that the butterflies love, too, and the plants alone are nice to look at. They come in all kinds of different shapes and colors...

    Fascinating.

A lot of artists, particularly those who enroll in the more rigorous BFA programs, take Human Perception classes while they're in art school. As a Media Arts major I considered it one of the most interesting and beneficial classes I took in college. Not only did we learn how human beings perceptual faculties operate, we learned how to work with, manipulate and even trick those faculties. And in case you're wondering, yes I did learn how to plant subliminal imagery and messages into video, film and other visual media.
