Funny how much you try to insult my grandmother. My grandma on my moms side of the family who was a doctor owns a city house in Hildburghausen.

The house and land i live on belongs my grandparents on my fathers side.

Its so called Bodenreform Land. My family got it in 1950 i think. They came from silesia and after the war got land to build up something

There is nothing wrong with moving around. Each winter in Chicago was getting worse in the last several years and my wife seriously started to think about moving south. We are thinking Carolinas 10-15 years from now. A house is just a tool that keeps you from the elements.
Besides, living in an old house might be dangerous to your health. For example, very old houses in the US have at least one layer of paint that contains lead. Old plumbing contains lead too. The older your home is, the more chances there are that it has something that is not good for you.

1945 Bodenreform. All land owners of 100 hectars and more lost their land and all their possessions and were incarcerated in the former KZs in the SBZ.
The land was redistributed in 5 to 20 hectare parcels.
in 1947, because those mini farms could not operate, they were united into LPGs and VEG. The people lost their land again.
By 1950 as you think, there were no private owned farms in East Germany

So were do those hundreds of hectare and the forest, you claim your East German family owns, come from.

How did it really happen. That large a land ownership could only have happened during the time of iron curtain coming down and reunification.

Wrong again. My great grandfather was quite good administrator in silesia and he happened to be quite good in administration things in Thüringen as well. In the end he got more here than what he lost in silesia.

Yes, as I did, only I did not get a pay out, I am the youngest. My 2 oldest brothers got fathers companies, when he retired, the 2 younger ones a pet on the shoulder, get going boys, create something of your own.
None of us lived in our parents home, as adults, hardly anybody does. We built our own homes. What a horrible thought to have your parents look over your shoulder all the time.

We, the 2 youngest inherited my parents house. We sold it to a developer, very nice apartments, some rather high dollar, we got apartments instead cash. Senior living apartments, no barriers and so on. They rent out great. The rent is a very nice bonus

Able to afford a house in Berlin and maintain current lifestyle? Berlin is cheap as ****. Its actually cheaper than Weimar. Berlin has a ****ed up left liberal city government that runs evrything down and even offers free housing and all that ****. Berlin is one of Germanies cheapest cities.
