There are 41 US deaths from coronavirus since the first death on 2-29. Average deaths in the US are at 2.9 per day, still flat hovering around 3 per day after 14 days.

Nobody under 50 has died from coronavirus in the USA.

This is a politically driven panic. It's crazy.

 

You don't shut the country down to protect old people, you close things to protect your healthcare system. Think: do you want all the infections to happen at once, or do you want to spread them out over time?

Think.

 

Not all the nation is in a panic. Only a portion of those whose party is creating a panic are panicking.

 

The Republican governor of Ohio already shut the school system down. You have to wonder why all these Republicans, including Trump, are going "full retard" over this.

He would be giving out free Zika Virus immunization shots to old people, H1N1 immunization shots to pregnant women, and the left would praise him.

 

I am thinking, and paying attention to the reality. I"m not here claiming the tens or hundreds of millions will die like your lefty friends have done.

 

Uh, no. Democrats went into a panic exactly like they do every single time Trump speaks. The left have been acting like clowns and this panic infused democrat hysteria is going to turn around and bite them.

That's because it's inevitable now. My question, however, is this... What is one month going to do? Unless a vaccine is found, this solves nothing because people will still be going out and about and be among each other.

 

I don't think we would know if we did reach Italy's rate due to lack of testing.

Comparing country to country is an imperfect exercise, but it does serve as a gauge of what could happen and should help to tailor our response.

As for politically driven panic, do you think the Chinese were worried about public opinion when they shut down entire areas?

 

Only about 5-10% of the cases hit the critical level IE: The level of which to be hospitalized. One of the reasons it's overwhelming the system is that we have EVERYONE wanting to be tested and treating everyone. We just have to realize, that isn't possible. No matter how many temporary tents and hospitals we build.

That isn't a GOP thing either, or a Trump downplaying thing. As we're seeing with the numbers: It's just the facts, that's why they're telling us to stay home. People are acting like Trump and only Trump has been a source of information. That's not true, we do have experts on the ground on this issue. And those experts are telling us: This will pass over, okay maybe many millions will get it but we don't have the capacity to test everyone.

It sucks for the elderly and for those with compromised immune systems. "We need to know the exact number". No, we don't. We already have the strain to be researched by the scientific community now. Knowing exact numbers won't help sort out the fatality rate. And frankly, it wouldn't be out of place to call them influenzia-deaths since they are in fact related to other corona viruses.

The actions that the Left wants us to take, is counterproductive and unhelpful to the situation.

 

School shut downs:

Schools have been providing kids with 3 free meals a day. For poor kids, how do they eat? Go to the school cafeteria as usual?
When we had a school holiday, I played with the neighborhood kids and had a lot more direct contact outside playing than I would have had sitting in class with a teacher telling us to wash our hands.
Not everyone can afford a nanny. Mom or dad has to miss work...and income.
Healthcare workers and first responders have kids too. Someone has to stay home with the kids when school's out.

Closing schools for a month if there is not a local epidemic seems poorly thought out.

 

How many people will die will depend on how the issue is handled.

If you don't do much except preach everything is fine, you will almost certainly find millions contract the virus in the US and a fraction (perhaps 1-3%) die from it (meaning hundreds of thousands, but not millions). Of those dying, most will be elderly and people with compromised immune systems, but a large number (something like 10% of the total fatalities, or tens of thousands of people) will also be otherwise healthy people.

Even taking the modest measures that countries like Italy (or Iran) are taking, will still likely see the virus ultimately claim several thousand lives (including hundreds of lives of otherwise healthy people) and hundreds of thousands of people getting ill.

The difference, in other words, between millions getting sick and hundreds of thousands dying, as opposed to hundreds of thousands getting sick and several thousand dying, will depend on the steps being taken to confront this virus.

My own guess is that the final tally for the US before the summer will show 20-30 thousand deaths (including several thousand otherwise healthy people) and a few million who will have contracted the virus and showed signs of illness. And that final tally for the US will be worse than the final tally for either Italy or Iran or even China. In part, because too many Americans are just like you.

 

Meanwhile several republicans in congress are in quarantine, trump likely infected, stock market tanking...but yay owning the libs! Lol

Shutting down travel and telling people how to protect themselves is how we are handling the issue. Once there is community spread, cities and states are shutting down large events and telling people to stay at home as much as possible...particularly the elderly.

Other than common sense strategies, there isn't much control over how many will die. There is no vaccine and no treatment.

Your prediction will be right or wrong. No one has a crystal ball, and by summer know one will remember what you predicted today, or the situation will change and so will your prediction. So we'll take your prediction for what it's worth, just another opinion.

 

Trump is about to speak at a press conference. We'll see how he's sounding today. He was sounding exhausted at the Oval Office address. Melania should make him rest and send him out for a couple rounds of golf.

 

They knew that their people who were getting sick in December, maybe earlier, had a novel virus. They wanted the tourism and Chinese New Year profits, so they didn't say anything until tens of millions of travelers had gone to Hubei Pronvince and got infected. Then they shut it down.

Again : You don't want the infections to swamp the system. You want to slow the rate of new infections. That means testing, quarantine, social distance, banning large gatherings, and closing schools. We finally started doing some of that on wed. Lets hope we don't turn into italy.
