It isn't just about what public health officials and other responsible figures are preaching, but what others who are trying to preach "everything is fine, go about your usual business" are preaching too. The more people listen to the latter, the worse the situation will become. And I am suggesting that the latter voices are more prevalent in the US than they should be.
I agree, except there are measures that can be taken to limit the spread or, alternatively, voices that will basically make people do reckless things (reckless not just to themselves, but to their communities). And until there is a vaccine or treatment, limiting the spread of the virus is the best that can be done.
I make no claim that my prediction is anything more than an opinion and can turn out to be wrong, either underestimating or overestimating the issue. But the more I notice reactions to the virus take such a partisan turn, with "Trump supporters" disproportionately interested in singing from the tune that says: "everything is fine, go about your usual business, don't worry", the more it becomes obvious that measures that will eventually be preached even more clearly by public health officials (such as staying home and similar things as being preached in Iran and even enforced somewhat in Italy) will be ignored by a large number of people in the US. And that will mean that the final tally will likely end up being worse than even Italy or Iran. At least, IMHO.

The google app being trumpeted is very similar to what Iran had developed, but in Iran's case, google (due to US sanctions, although using other propaganda in the process) took out the app from google store. Iranians still have access to it through the web, but I am certainly not pleased with google's action.

The Iranian government released an official coronavirus app for Iranians, but Google pulled it from its app store

The risk to the majority of the country is still low. That message is not in conflict with the message that certain communities and age groups and those with preexisting health problems need to be extra cautious. No one has said "Everything is fine," not from the government in weeks. Everyone does need to assess their own risk based on their age, health and whether or not the virus has gotten out of hand in their own community. For some individuals, going about their usual business is still practical. As the virus spreads, more locales need to be more broadly cautious. That is being handled by mayors, governors and independent school districts and the decisions they make.

You have it very wrong on this issue. The threat of not staying at home isn't simply a personal threat to your own health, but the threat of extending the chain that spreads the virus. The more people go out with their regular routine, the more the virus will spread exponentially. The idea that you need to wait for the numbers to hit higher figures before you start telling people to do what they should be doing once you have any community spread, is itself misguided.

Sweet! Market is feeling a little better with more details on U.S. plan to address the virus. Nice way to end the week.

You have to balance public health with how much you can afford to damage the economy. No country can just shut everything down and bring the economy to a hard stop...not even the USA. As the current hot spots improve, other hot spots will come. This is how you spread the impact out so that not everyone gets hit all at once....either with illness or with financial pain.

We better hope it's not 5-10% of patients need critical care, because this is more contagious than the flu and the flu affects 30 million people or so every year. If 30 million people get this, and 10% need critical care, that's 3 million critical patients. We couldn't possibly cope with that, we'd have to do triage. If the number of people who need critical care is really 1%, then that's 300,000 critical patients, and that we could deal with, if it's spread out over time.

The problem is, we have enough data now to suggest a lot more than 10% of people people will get this and more than 1% will need critical care. Trump's conference was encouraging, at least. I hope the testing goes smoothly.

My understanding according to an expert in the Medical field as to
virus is ironic.Virus live to keep going { need a host } and really don't want
to kill many in a quick burst. Therefore eliminating their goal or purpose for existence.
So they mutate and adapt which makes them less potent and able to
attract more hosts. For example what good would virus serve if is killed off all those
it attached to in days.Their Party would be over.No more hosts or humans to infect.
    Or some such thingy.

Well , I was up 30 ft in a tree today precariously balanced trying to work this bi pod contraption into place when I noticed below a black cat just walking by and then I realized today is Friday the 13th in the Ides of March

So I’m taking a break till tomorrow because that coincidence plus a virus out there too, is pushing my luck bit too far.

China did their best; I think we're benefiting. I don't think they considered PR as major.

10 times as deadly and 3x-6x more infectious. Run your numbers again.

And Chinas numbers dropped once they welded people inside their apartment buildings.

Comical response. I want the territory your army occupies. If I drop a biological on your army that persists for months, you will have time to come up with a vaccine then I accomplished nothing.

Trump is bowing to political pressure. Shame on him. Personally I think Russia collusion was a better opportunity for attack.

    Both.

New York will have 10,000 cases soon. The hospitals right now are caring for 117 people with the virus. Wait until its 1,170.
