He tried to save Vietnam from Communist tyranny and he tried to lift the poor out of poverty. Was he cruel to protesters?

 

No he didn't try to save Vietnam from the communists. He could have but he was too scared of Russia and China. He should have bombed Hanoi to kill their leadership, mined the harbors and let the fighter jocks from USAF and the Navy do their jobs. And since we were being accused od supporting a puppet regime we should have gone ahead and installed one.

Yes, he advocated for beating up war protesters and it happened more or less on his order.

 

I'm not sure it would have made any difference, the problem was it wasn't possible to stop the flow of NVA down the Ho Chi Minh trail and through South Vietnam's long porous borders. Nixon was right but it was too late. LBJ was not given to handouts, the idea was hand-ups. I would also say the protesters could sometimes deserve it.

Atfer tet of 68 the viet cong was completely destroyed. The war was nearly won.
If we had mined the harbors and bombed the rail lines coming out of China . The north vietnamese would not have had any supplies to bring south ti fight with.
Two problems even with my scenario.

1. South Vietnam had a horrible government
2. The leadership in North Vietnam was committed even if we had done everything i recommend they would have just waited, slowly resupplied and invade again in 10-15 years.
The war in Vietnam was a really sad saga.
There were so many opportunities to avoid it dating back to 1931. But i certainly blame Johnson for the nearly 60,000 American dead.
Keeping countries from becoming communist is a noble endeavor. At least we saved Thailand.

Nixon was meddling in the Vietnam peace talks before he was president, then dragged the war on for 6 years costing 30,000 more US servicemen (including my older brother) their lives. The crack national security team appointed by Cheney/Bush sat on their asses while we got hit at home (3000 dead on US soul) then they started two idiotic turd hunt wars designed to stuff the pockets of their war profiteering cronies which are still going on.
