Mitt Romney was the only Republican senator to vote to remove an impeached Trump from office, and the only one who is saying this about the Texas lawsuit trying to overturn the election: "dangerous and destructive of the cause of democracy." "The idea of supplanting the vote of the people with partisan legislators is so completely out of our national character that it's simply madness."

Romney is a pariah in the Republican Party, anyway. He is called a RINO.

Why not assume that, and turn Democrat or Independent (caucusing with the Democrats)?

And then, if only one of the two Georgia runoffs go Dem (Warnock is more likely to win his seat than Ossoff), the Dems would have the majority in the Senate (with veep Harris breaking the 50-50 tie).

Romney has been so outraged with stuff that Trump and his acolytes and sycophants have been doing, that I don't understand why he is still with the Republican Party, which now is no longer the traditional GOP but is rather the POT or Party Of Trump.

    Romney should definitely switch sides.

    Opinions?

My opinion? If he switched over, you should follow. You both say you are not democrats but the fruit of the tree is Democrat 100%.

Mitt should retire, take a couple child-brides, and retreat to the wilds of Utah to contemplate the mysteries of his faith. The ONLY presidential election that I stayed home in bed.

Your post is everything that is wrong with the country.

I don't even care if you like Romney's opinions or not - that's your choice and that's not the problem. But the country would be a LOT better if elected officials didn't feel forced to vote along party lines all the time, no matter how stupid the takes are. Romney seems to have more common sense and a mind of his own. When he disagrees with republicans - he doesn't shy away from it.

Again - it doesn't even matter if you agree with him or not. It's just the idea of not being tied to follow party lines 100%.

You keep mixing up anti-Trump and Democrat. At this point in time I am supporting the Democratic Party because the GOP has been acting dishonorably and against Democracy and states' rights. I don't need to stop being an independent to lend temporary support to the Democratic Party. Over the decades I did just that on occasion, and did the opposite (supporting the Republican Party) at other times. You can scream to the top of your lungs that I'm a Democrat; it doesn't make me one.

It's not my POST that is everything that is wrong with the country. I'm merely an observer of the situation. Don't shoot the messenger. I didn't make this situation.

I think most politicians should switch to independent.
We need to completely disband political affiliation in this nation — especially as long as we have a duopoly.

Cult members are mad because you are not in their cult so all they can do is regurgitate talking points.

Just because you can think for yourself and they cannot you are the enemy.
Millions of people like you are why trump will be a one term failed and impeached president.

Romney's public policy views are republican. His views on taxes, on budget priorities, on regulation, on social issues all mirror the GOP. And he is not a parriah in Utah. He would not feel comfortable as a Democrat. If anyone would it would be Susan Collins of Maine but she won re-election and has no incentive to switch.

Moscow Mitch will probably be the majority leader again and we will get absolutely nothing done in Washington on any subject for at least two years.

No senator or congressman should ever have to follow in lock-step with their party. It should be ok to speak out against things one doesn't believe in.

Yes, too bad. Susan Collins has said in an interview that "My DNA is Republican and I won't switch." One idea would be to invite her to a cabinet position. But several picks are in and her name has not been floated so that's out, too. Toomey on the other hand who will retire in 2022 might consider a cabinet position. The Democratic governor of PA would then appoint his replacement. But I don't really see this happening.

True, but these days, any talk of compromise, collaboration, or any criticism of one's own party is immediately called treasonous, among shouts of RINO or DINO.

I don't want any republican to be a part of this administration unless they demanded that the Senate actually hear direct witness testimony in the impeachment trial before deciding to be a juror, and unless they have been referring to Biden as 'President-elect Biden' this last month, and condemning efforts to steal this election.

Collins has not put country over party yet. We can assume she won't.

If Romney identifies with the core principles of the Republican party, he should stay where he is. Trumpism is not Republicanism. Those who understand that appreciate his loyalty to his party. He was the only one who seemed not to fear retribution from Trump.

I think Romney is still far more a Republican than a Democrat, and he certainly is not an Independent. He just hates Trump, probably because Trump did not appoint him as Secretary of State.

You are making assumptions about me and engaging in a personal attack, calling me dishonest. If I were a Democrat I would have no trouble saying so. Do I look like someone who hides opinions out of some sort of shame? LOL. I've spoken multiple times here of my opinions, both my rightist ones, and my leftist ones, given that I harbor both, depending on the topic (therefore I'm used to being attacked by both sides - by leftists when I talk against Bernie Sanders and AOC, for example, and by rightists when I talk against Trump - it doesn't stop me from issuing these opinions). These days, saying that one is a Republican is what might result in shame, given what the GOP is doing, enabling a wannabe fascist dictator to try to stay in power, steal the election, and subvert democracy.

Again, it is amazing how some people here think that they have crystal balls or telepathic devices and can tell characteristics of a perfect stranger in an anonymous Internet forum. Do you actually think that you know me better than I know me? It is laughable. But go ahead, think whatever you want about what you think my affiliation is (although I'm unaffiliated). Like I said, you thinking so doesn't make it true.

Who are those who understand that? The Republican Party has made a pariah out of him, to the point that he cried in public one of these days. Maybe at the local level people respect him (in Utah) but nationally, they can't stop bashing him.

Yes, one would hope that the GOP would stop being the POT (Party Of Trump) but it doesn't seem like it is happening, even though that loser lost the election.

I'd hope that he hates Trump for more than just being passed on for Secretary of State. Romney does seem to have some integrity, like McCain had. It is a pity that so few in the current GOP display this quality.

Romney is running for president in 2024.
He is positioning himself as the TRUE conservative and the reasonable alternative to the lunacy destroying the Republican party.

He's in a safe seat and has a pulpit to be the candidate to save Republicans from themselves.
So why should he change parties?
