This is a tactic often used by fundamentalists and I do distinguished them from the vast majority of honest Christians. So by your own link 54% do not believe that the bible is the literal word of god, and of course your poll predates the poll I posted!

 

Laughable nonsense - there is a difference between believing that the Bible contains God's word - and believing that every word is the "Literal word of God" - and that talking donkeys are real.

Only on the extreme end of the religious spectrum do we find Christians that take such fairy tales literally - along with a host of other fables that do not pass the giggle test.

How did that Spectacled bear manage to swim from South America and back - leaving no trace of its journey. Odd that we have never found a kangaroo bone anywhere but in Australia don't you think.

Now I grant that there is a significant percentage of irrational people out there but, rational people do not take all these stories "literally"

 

The poll does actually break it down into those that believe in the bible being the literal word of god and others, 39% believed it in 2014 whilst 54% did not believe the bible to be the literal word of god. This poll was published in 2014 compared with 2017 in the poll I quoted. Numbers who believe in the literal word of god have been falling since the 70s so it is reasonable to project that the number who do not believe in the literal word of god is even higher than the 68% in 2017.

"inspired" and the word "literal."

Nobody with any sense at all takes the Bible literally on everything
it says.

If we take the Bible "literal" we have to conclude that King Herod
had 4 legs and a bushy tail. How so? Because Jesus called
King Herod a fox. He said in Luke 13:32 "Go and tell that fox."

"He replied, "Go tell that fox, 'I will keep on driving out demons
and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day
I will reach my goal.'__Luke 13:32

Jesus clearly meant that King Herod was crafty like a fox and
not that King Herod WAS a fox. But Jesus SAID that King Herod
WAS a fox. So we do not take the Bible literally on everything it
says.

So?

So if you mean by the word "literal" do the vast majority of Christians
believe King Herod had 4 legs and a bushy tail, then no the vast
majority does not believe that.

But if you mean by the word "literal" that the Bible is the inspired
and the true word of God, then yes a vast majority of Christians
do believe that.

So it all depends on what one means by the word "literal."
