Starting this as a thread to handle SCOTUS decisions today, including: SNIP Trump's financial documents (2) Electoral college disputes (2) Obamacare contraceptive mandate Religious employment disputes Federal ban on Robocalls Limits of tribal sovereignty ENDSNIP Should be starting @ 10 am and I understand they release them in 10 minute blocks.... I'm more familiar with the first 2 entries above, but will be learning more about the others later today. I'm not sure if all 8 will be released today or not... Here are the professionals Blogging about this https://www.scotusblog.com/ Today, we TRULY see if this is a political court or not... I suspect they will be, but Roberts may surprise once (or twice) again... If Trump wins Trump vs Vance, we might as well just disband the SCOTUS for dereliction of duty... Thoughts?
The federal ban on Robocalls should be a law, but I feel there is too much money involved for that to be banned Trumps finances will never be released (at least while he is president)
I agree they won't be "released" to the public, but certainly grand juries are entitled to them as part of a criminal investigation ASAP, aren't they? Regardless of who is being investigated.. But you bring up a great point. What happens when we have a D POTUS, with a D Sec Treas.... Surely, they will turn over his taxes to Congress as required by law??
Nice hedge there If things go how the left wants, Roberts is a savior. If they don't go how the left wants, the court is political
I forgot to post the base thread, listing the cases https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/05/politics/supreme-court-remaining-cases-july-opinions/index.html
I forgot to post the thread with the case summaries (Now Post #6). Vance is the Manhattan DA who is investigating Trump and his Org for stuff Cohen claimed about Trump lying about his finances for various reasons... Here's a reasonable summary and how it compares to Clinton v Jones... https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/05/supreme-court-clinton-v-jones-trump-v-vance.html
First decision - Barr v. American Association of Political Consultants. - This is the Robocall case Experts are trying to decipher it.... "As a result, plaintiffs still may not make political robocalls to cellphones, but their speech is now treated equally with debt-collection speech."
Next up, the 2 faithless elector cases "A state may enforce an elector's pledge to support his party's nominee--and the state voters' choice--for President." Written by Kagan.... might be unanimous... This should have been a no brainer
definitely should have been. another shot at the left wingers who wanted to undermine our Constitution and rewrite the EC
Those are the only 3 (effectively 2) decisions for today. Still waiting for an announcement on when the next day will take place.
Apparently... I wonder why that is? Have they made the decisions or are they just more complicated to write out??
It could happen for any number of reasons, but some of the more important cases (the tax ones) were only argued quite recently and they probably still need to be polished up before release.
Well, I guess I jumped the gun on this thread, since the tax cases are the ones I primarily care about.... I guess I'll keep my powder dry next time... From what I read, July opinions are rare, but this is the Trump-Pandemic era....
As with any subpoena and in fact a search warrant signed by a judge I would think there must be some probable cause, not a fishing expedition and of course they would remain sealed unless it goes to court.
LOL... they have cancelled checks and other testimony from Michael Cohen, plus 2 lower court rulings where "probable cause" wasn't even brought up.... Obviously it would remain sealed with the grand jury.
Lol he told Congress the same lie that trump told all of us to get elected And it doesn’t matter, he had physical evidence.
...the argument here appears to mean that you believe the only probable cause to get a tax return is the tax return itself.
Nobody can investigate the president without the presidents consent. @Bluesguy has been very consistent on that lol
