I'm an old fart, grew up in the 1950's way before most of these social programs being invented. I remember neighbor helping neighbor, I remember churches being involved with the poor and after disasters. Charities such as the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Jaycees, Kiwanis Club, all giving helping hands to others. At school I remember can drives and clothes drives.

I remember going over to our neighbors on the farm next to our and help him rebuilt his barn after a tornado. Not just my family, but 20 families or more. That was just the way it was. Go back to the same place, same town. People gave of their time, energy and money to each other when someone was in need. You don't see any individual help anymore. What I hear is the government office is three block down on the right. Bye.

It's like the community that once existed doesn't anymore. That the people whom I grew up with now totally rely on government to do what our parents once did for others. Have we become selfish or has the government taken the incentive away? Sort of why worry about your neighbor, he knows where the government office is.

Granted, this country has become a lot less religious over the years. That in itself may have something to do with it. I don't know. What I see happening is we are now relying on government instead of relying on ourselves and others.

Maybe my old home town is unique. But I doubt it. That was and still is a small town with farms all around. If that is happening there, imagine what is going on in the cities.

Catholic Charities, Salvation Army, etc., are still significant. In many cases they've expanded. For example, Salvation Army does job training.

The problem has grown faster than these organizations can handle. Also, those organizations were never designed to cover the US.
I don't believe it has had to do with waning religion.

It seems more associated with the fact that our society is far more mobile than it once was. Plus, significant numbers of our population don't have the resources to do more than keep their own heads above water.

There is a gigantic wage gap and labor has been in a downward spiral that is not going to be solved by reducing the taxes of corporations and the wealthy.

Tax reform in my opinion was the last thing this country needed. You may have something there, but it is a lot less visible today. Thanks for your input.

I believe you are missing the larger point my friend, in your response nowhere did i hear you defend the cause of the GOP lead free market solving the troubles of the poor. Which leads me to state that the free market never...... ever helped the poor, it is true that the local community in america has suffered but the government is not the reason why. I agree with Willreadmore and say that the problems have out ground the capabilities of those charitable institutions, I challenge you to ask these institutions what there biggest problem is and i bet if will be funding, they have an abundance of volunteers the problem is money.

Spooky, did the snake that tempted Eve not have an affect on her life? you speak as if you are in some moral paradox not of your own making. If both candidates are the devil but one said vote for me and you will never have to feel oppressed again, does it not still make it a deal with the devil? you act as if you are stuck in a binary world, forever beholden to only two choice's. That is the whole point of the gospel, the entire point of being a christian, a follower of Christ is to say that left or right, GOP or DEMS, Trump or Hillary all are not correct paths. I wounder why you are so bound to the wrong path?

That's about as transparent as it gets - vote for who we want you to vote for or abstain.
