This is true for the most part as people rarely do much research in establishing their personal political opinions and position. Remember that 1/2 of the population has an IQ of 100 or less and they aren't the sharpest pencils in the box. Nothing against them personally and they do quite well in society but they don't do the research necessary to be highly informed on the issues and are easily swayed by propaganda that is normally based upon half-truths.

At the same time there is the ignorant position that scientific studies represent the opinions of those conducting the studies but, in fact, they measure the opinions of those participants in the study. If a person states they are a "conservative" then the researcher assumes that they are telling the truth and that they are a conservative. If the same person says they're deeply religions then the researcher believes the person. Sure, some can lie but most do not and the studies are large enough to account for that possibility.

So when a study of the opinions of people establishes that those with low IQ's are more likely to be prejudiced, more likely to be racists, more likely to hold fundamentalist religious beliefs, and that they are more likely to adopt conservative political ideologies those studies aren't reflecting the opinions of the researchers but instead the studies reflect the opinions of those that participated in the study.

What I mean is: religious parents teach their children that abortion, homosexuality and crime are wrong. The children grow up and see Democrats defending abortion, advancing the interests of homosexuals and defending criminals. They have no choice but to become Republicans. Even liberal Republicans call themselves conservative to get votes, so these young Republicans consider themselves conservatives without ever forming a detailed economic policy. If you asked almost anyone on the street; How much money should the government give poor Americans to keep them housed and fed, they don't have a good number. Let someone who understands economics well pick a sensible number, then ask 1,000 people for their number. Those who pick a number higher than the sensible number should be labeled liberal no matter what they call themselves. Those who pick a lower number should be considered conservative. Liberal should not have to mean that you champion the rights of all minorities just because they are minorities. Conservative should not mean you oppose equal rights (though perhaps you oppose the special rights some Democrats are proposing.) Those are economic terms. Two different words are needed for social reforms.
I think you will find if you separate the economic philosophy of the masses from their social philosophy a majority of Americans are economically conservative but socially liberal. At present the battleground is abortion and homosexuality. In the 1960s it was rights for women and blacks. Those on the so-called conservative side of that battle can rightly be called bigots. Those who oppose special rights for homosexuals and at-will abortion mostly base their argument on religious grounds and can not be called bigots.

Real Americans are more intelligent than Progressives, that may seem like complexity to the brain dead MaO'Bama voters whoi are befuddled by wet paper bags.

An agent provocateur is someone assigned to join the other side and mislead it into an agenda that will trick uncommitted people into joining the side he came from. Ever since the 60s, Liberals have intentionally supported an agenda designed to trick people into reacting by joining the Republicans. This is obvious if you know how totalitarian oligarchies stay in power. Not that the Limousine Liberals themselves are conscious of their real motives. But they are subconciously driven by the class instinct drummed into them during childhood. It is obvious that they are anti-majority snobs, so they can't be truly Liberal.
