I think it depends on what you mean by "when you know" Are we talking attraction? because logically, one is then talking about mental activity, which means that the person who discovers he's gay must be capable of mental tasks that make such a thing possible. You don't know you're a human at a year old because you simply don't have a concept of "human" as opposed to other objects. You really don't understand gender at this point either (I've seen some evidence that kids up to about four can view gender as somewhat mutable, but suffice it to say that a kid under 3 probably doesn't know his or her gender) so up until you're about 4-5 years old, you simply do not have the capacity to say whether you're a boy, always going to be a boy, and thus are supposed to like girls. As to actual attraction, you have to understand what love means, what you find attractive, and that it isn't what you're "supposed to like". It's a question for brain science, not simply looking at naughty bits and declaring things to be.
