Seriously, tell us you drive your car up in the winter time and travel in snow. You kindly omitted when you do travel.

Without exception, no one in Florida prepares their cars for winter weather, then just drives around in the south. It’s laughable.

That’s not what we were saying. That’s your made up story.
My point is, 20 year old cars that people drive in FLorida, are ill suited to drive in cold weather, especially snow storms. Let’s all get real.

I dont try to, I am a Florida native. Lived here every day of my life. I'm not frozen for 4 months every year.

Even better. The only thing I have to deal with is hurricanes. In my 38 years here, I have been effected by two. Irma went right over us on 9/10/17 a hundred miles from landfall. Our privacy fence was put up in 2006, I expected to lose half of it, I was amazed, not one panel lost. We saw 100mph winds and a ft of rain. Had to wade thru 4 inches of water to get to my door, for several days. I'll take that over being frozen for 5 months, every year.

It’s a different life. The cold affects us little what we do outside. You just add the right clothing. Snow ? It’s a time to play.
It’s much easier dealing with snow storms then flooding. We average between 100 and 200 inches of snow a year. The more, the better. Snow is a great insulation and easy ( and fun) to drive through with 4 wd and winter tires. If you work with winter instead of against it, it’s much easier to deal with then hurricanes and oppressive heat. For the same price you pay for a home in a crowded suburb in Florida, we’ve lived on a fresh water lake surrounded by golf and hiking for decades which is focus of shear fun and pleasure year round. IMO, they’re no comparison.

To each their own. A decent used home here, can be had for 100K (granted, my small town is small) Cost of living is much higher in more metropolitan and coastal areas.
Born and raised here, if you live in the heat, it's fine. When working in it, drink plenty of water, take a shade break, when needed.

We rent a 500 sq ft, mother in laws in the landlords backyard, surrounded by a 6 ft privacy fence, I love it and keep it locked. No random visitors...did not call first? The gate will be locked. 550$ a month, water, electric and internet included.

Landlord loves me, I do everything from patching roofs to replacing outlets and mowing. Our private compound, our unit started life as a 2 car garage in the backyard when both were built in the 60s, converted into an apartment in the 90's. Would not move North on a bet!

Two winters ago, it got down to 26 degrees here. Last winter, no freeze at all. Freezes here, last about an hour and a half, at most. Maybe 3 to 5 times a year.

I hear you. You have your fencing for privacy, we have the deep woods. We can’t even see our neighbors they live so far a way.

In the winter, when it gets to 26 degrees, we wear shorts.
We seldom lock our doors except to keep occasional wandering black bear from getting into the garage. We leave the keys in the car and the tractor cause as yet, the bears can’t drive. I take the trash out weekly by driving 2 miles to the end of the private dirt road through the woods on the side of a mountain in our side by side. The fishing and hunting is awesome if you want real food cheap.

Other then that, everything is totally safe. Everyone knows that everyone around here has a big dog and a firearm. Just wear orange and carry dog biscuits when you go for a walk.

It occasionally gets noisy when a couple of neighbors fly their seaplanes and choppers out to work Into the big city early in the morning. But they are friendly and will take you up anytime for fun. We’re too “ poor” to have one.

Sounds pretty awesome, except that cold. Our city is Population 8K, 4.3 sq miles. Surrounded by 3o miles of nothing, in any direction. I plan to retire on 5 acres, a few miles outside of town. Maybe a horse and some cattle, goats, few dogs. Maybe growing reefer will finally be legal?

Have me a greenhouse and workshop/storage? I guess, whatever makes you happy? 5 acre lots, just in the county go for 50K, high and dry. Maybe build a little rental for exra income?

We always say, the cold keeps the “criminals” out.
    Sounds like a plan !

My connection to the south is an older sister, awsome lady, who lived with her wonderful husband of many years in St Pete. Our families are all former military.

An older bros good advice has always been, retire as early as possible while you have good health. Don’t wait. We want to spend more retirement years parting then on a ventilator.

I lived nearby in Tampa for 16 years. Moved a hundred miles south to Arcadia a decade ago. I wont ever move back to a big city. I fabricate and weld, between that and a possible rental and growing crops, I should be able to pay property taxes and electric. Just want to get by and be left alone, plan to be buried here, some day.

Does the car's 'blood' get thin? There are different tire treads to handle the worst of the snow and ice, but to answer your question, yes, I've driven north more than once in winter weather.

I currently drive an AWD vehicle, and my old Tacoma is 4WD TRD... both of which would have no problem dealing with (and have dealt with) a northern winter.

You may not have been affected much by hurricanes but as you've seen many have been affected big time. Losing their home to flood waters can be devastating. To my knowledge cold weather or snow hasn't destroyed entire communities.
Not sure what area you're saying is frozen for five months. I live in MA and I would say it's only "frozen" cold about three weeks out of the entire winter. The rest is quite mild.
    But to each his own.

You’re funny. We were talking about 20 year old Floridian beaters, now you’re throwing in newer awd and 4 wd trucks. What’s your point ? You can go off topic ?

Yes, and literally no one in Florida buys winter tires for their 20 year old beater, we’ve already shown that cold weather high cca batteries can’t take the heat of Florida as well too. There is no reason to winterize a 20 year old Floridian beater.

And you avoid snow storms too. Most people in the north hunker down and don’t go out till the roads clear if they don’t have good winter tires and 4 wd/ awd.
