Don’t be an extremist...NOone ever said all women wanted to go to college so get rid of that red herring . Not all men wanted to go to college either
When you were growing up and when I was growing up girls were not encouraged to go to college except to be a teacher or a nurse or a secretary. I remember telling my students how I couldn’t go to Stuyvesant high school because I was a girl and how the city colleges required girls to have a higher average to get in. They said, “you must have really been angry“ and I said I wasn’t because I didn’t know any better I didn’t have a raised consciousness. Why do you think women are filling the colleges and medical schools? Did they suddenly get smart ? No their consciousness was raised and they realized that they have more opportunities. Title 9 opened sports to girls and scholarships. It is a different time today and I am thrilled at the opportunities for young women and young men. Girls can hope to be more than homemakers if they choose. And girls can be homemakers and respected but if a man chooses to be a homemaker he isn’t respected. I think women today have many more options.
You talk about shop classes and I have a funny story. I went to the principal and I said that I wanted the shops integrated. Boys can take cooking and girls can take electrical shop and woodworking. The home ec teacher came down. She was very smug and said boys don’t want to take cooking and she asked and no hands went up. I then looked at the class and I said, “you know boys , you can eat as much food as you want in the class” and every hand Ajit up and that was the beginning of integrated shops in my school.
