emotional cleansing? amusement? the intellectual satisfaction I derive from a well crafted insult?

Or perhaps its just that many of those I do the matching with don't usually experience the kinda of contempt, derision and insult that they routinely dish out and I have a skewed sense of social justice.

Enjoyment and payback. I only insult those who insult me and I try to come up with insults more clever than they used. By doing so, I hope to forestall future insults.

I would say that in debate I have control over my actions in that it is my choice to be combative or civil. I find that when I am combative it is caused by my baser self (emotions) while my civility is based more on logic.

I can relate with that. What positive (if any) does the revenge gain you?

The question mark tells me that you are not sure, which makes sense to me as IMO insulting others feeds a baser need which is often hard to logically explain. When I insult others it is because it makes me feel superior... opporative word "feel" which is an aspect of baser self which is instinctual and largely if not entirely feelings based.

Thanks for answering the question as I am interested in finding out if others insult for the same reasons that I do.

On the last sentence, do you find that insulting forestalls future insults? My experience is that it is often akin to pouring fuel on a fire.

How does the above add to a discussion with another person in a positive way? If it does not add a positive then why do the above?

Sometimes within a discussion, 2 or more members get to slinging arrows, or a bit of trolling. It usually does nothing but perhaps lighten a mood, or divert for a moment, ( if done well ) .

Granted, it can go too far sometimes, & that's what staff is for.... Or the "report" button I guess.

Either way, it's never about "adding" much of a thing to a discussion.

Honestly, it's usually the "Nothing" Threads where I see the most practice.

And really, in those cases, who cares anyway?

Do you play the guitar? I've always thought to ask with your cool avatar. I have one of the mini Marshall stacks. The 15w about 3' tall. It's actually my only amp at the moment. Have a Masterlead 100 broke down from the old days. Oh I do run a JMP1 tube preamp, effect unit and noise gate and compressor into it. It sounds pretty sweet but no volume.

Well, if you are anyone with a different opinion than the left, mainly democrats, you have already insulted them.

Never in history has there ever been a bigger collection of bigoted, hate filled, anti-Americans than the far right. Their hatred for America is but a sad reflection of the hatred for themselves.

Oh yeah. The left just makes it way to easy to pass up. Let's face it. The word pathetic doesn't even begin to accurately describe them. And they just get so upset about it too.

That's a whole lot of bigoted, hate filled, anti-American ranting you're doing there.

Your little "GOD PUNISHES!" Was especially cute. Man you must be one tiny angry little person.

The question marks were to indicate context sensitivity of said insult.

I think its safe to assume that "ego feeding" in one form or another is high on the list of emotional motivators of insults.

Another musician, cool! Ya, heavy metal rhythm guitarist, started playing in 1987. Sadly today because of hand tremors I can no longer play and am in fact probibly going to sell my guitar and amp as they are just sitting around collecting dust. I have a little Line 6 amp with some cool effects. I like using a bit of delay to thicken the sound and love the noise gate as it keeps the feedback from becoming unruly. My amp does a surprisingly good job at simulating a tube amp which I love as it really adds range to the distortion based upon how soft or hard I strike the string. I miss playing, but age catches up to us all eventually.

Which does nothing to answer the following question; "What do you gain by insulting the bigoted?"

Interesting! Your description of those of us on the Right is exactly, word-for-word what I would use to describe those of you on the Left.

I'm no longer in the Republican (RINO) Party, so I couldn't really in fairness respond to the poll, but I'm a very staunch economic-Conservative. That means I care greatly about our country's security, both militarily and economically. But I'm no "Social-Conservative". If you hyperliberal Democrats want to have one abortion after another, you hate the Constitution, you hate God, and you hate that thing you see in the mirror, that's just FINE with me.

But watch your step! A lot of us on the Right took oaths to defend the Constitution "against all enemies, foreign and domestic"...and that oath never expired....

Another laughable example of deluded right wing "thinking"!

Just in case you are unable to read, I have REPEATEDLY declared that I am a pro-lifer who actually survived an abortion attempt.

Had you only bothered to read rather than read into my posts you would have known that I have repeatedly written that abortion was legal under the Anglo Saxon common law (see my earlier references to Blackstone and the legal concept of "quickening").

    Hate the Constitution??

The Anglo Saxon common law which you deluded right wingers hate is in the Constitution under the 4th Amendment which I have quoted here previously.

    Hate God??

Utterly laughable as Jesus is the Prince of Peace while you post a photo of a gun toting soldier - the very antithesis of Jesus who said those who live by the sword shall die by the sword.

    Keep those laughs a-coming!

Thanks for the personal, ego driven projections. Says much about you, pal.
