Every day for me has been a day of travel through life. I have never looked back, like some I know, to ruminate about best days of my life since every day is a new challenge and every challenge brings new lessons. The big paradigm change for me was the day I quit look toward the future of my career to the day looking forward to the day my career would end. Even then when that arrives a new challenge will be presented.

I like challenges. For me that is the essence of life. I will look for each challenge until I am no longer here to enjoy it.

You can't stop yourself from growing older.

You CAN stop yourself from becoming feeble!

Becoming frail is a choice for those who are otherwise healthy. I am more physically active now than I was when I was working. I am probably as active now as I was back in my teens and twenties.

Yes, death is inevitable but making the most of life means taking an active part in it, not sitting on your ass and watching life go by.

At 71 I try to stay fit with cardio-vascular exercise regularly. My lungs are my weak point so I jog up to a mile about 4 times per week. But I find that if I can't jog for, let's say, a week, it takes me about 3 weeks to catch up again.

No need to jog, walking is the best exercise there is because it's less wear and tear of the hips and related joints (knees, ankles). For example, whilst I've been out on my odysseys I've witnessed 3 instances of dogs' back legs suddenly giving out when the owners have thrown something for them to 'fetch'. They might have been strained tendons of course, but in one of those instances, and from some distance away, I actually heard a distinct crack, so I'd guess it was the dog's hip joint breaking. Dogs don't need to run for exercise any more than we do; in fact by what I've said above, it's obviously better if they don't.

Could be a nutrition issue. Dogs chew bones to absoarb bone related nutrition for their own bones. Most dog foods are ultimately deficient.

Could be. Still no reason to run though. Actually more reason to not let them if their diet is deficient in some way? I'll bet not many dogs are given bones to chew on these days.

Dogs are built to run. If they aren't getting proper nutrition, encouraging them to run is not a good idea, but they're going to run some regardless. Its in their nature. Better to give them a bone and some raw meat or eggs every now and then, and run them to their hearts content :)

Some dog breeds do have genetic disorders from inbreeding though, and no amount of nutrition will fix them.

My dogs regularly have bones to chew on. In addition I give them hooves, sinews and other natural chewables because they need to exercise their jaw muscles. They much prefer these alternatives to their regular dog food.

Edit: I forgot to mention that my two dogs run around playing for a great deal of the day time.

I don't have a dog so it's irrelevant to me. I was a police dog handler for 4 years though, and apart from the occasional refresher training sessions in an enclosed space that lasted 15-20 minutes they were never allowed off-lead, and some of them lived to a ripe old age.

I think dogs are built to run hard once a week and then sleep most of the rest of the week. One kill will feed the pack for close to a week.

To myself. I don't want the forum to think I would feed fries to babies. Only potato chips & Oreos. Moose Munch once I have picked out the peanuts. I mean he could have an allergy. So I take that risk on myself.

Walking isn't the cardio-vascular exercise I need. And so that you will be comforted, let me say that I jog on a treadmill designed to reduce impact and save knees and ankles. I could ride a stationary bike but I prefer jogging. And my doctor approves.

Have you tried zero impact jogging in a heated pool? You use a flotation belt so your feet don't touch the bottom and then you can run without any danger of causing harm to your knees and ankles.

From what you said earlier about your impaired lungs function, 'vascular' doesn't enter into it; you need cardio-pulmonary exercises which will cause the lungs to acquire capacity. I know what you mean about the regularity though, because my walking route covers 20 miles return which I can do easily, but if the weather closes in for long periods as it often does with the extremes of heat and cold (I'm not a 'come rain or shine' walker), and I have to miss two or three of them, the first couple when I resume render me exhausted by the time I get back home.

Are there none in your vicinity? My local gym has a heated pool.
