OK you are making my point. This isn't a defense treaty with Ukraine. We promise to provide "assistance" which we are doing, and run to the UN security council.

    Check and check.

I was against expanding NATO so as to prevent this suffering. But the suffering is here, so I'm capable of immediately pivoting.

But countries should not make the same mistake as we just did with Ukraine. Stop talking about it, find a way to do it secretly. No build up, just stay quiet until you are in, and protected by Article 5.

Well, I have to think that Russian Hitler would have a much harder time with Finland than he is having even with Ukraine at present, and of course this kind of thing needs to be discussed and debated openly since it's ultimately up to the people if they want their nation in NATO.

It's up to the people to join the EU. It's up to the country's leaders in consultation with their generals whether or not to join a military alliance with war on the doorstep.

No, they had not placed near to border ... so not a single reason for the US to provoke Russia again and again.
You should be wondering why the US has been treating it like dirt all this time since the end of the cold war, like the cold war was never over. And that is precisely the point, because the war mongers in Washington have never had any real interest in having normal and good relations with Russia.
No matter what Putin and before him Yeltsin did and said, if they didn't submit to the will of the US and said yes to everything the US wanted, they were provoked again.

Do you consider why the US never allowed that anyone is able to trust Putin? Think about North Stream 1 and 2 ... done and started at a time where Putin did absolutly nothing evil ... NOTHING ... but who run mad and wanted from Germany that they cancel it, eh?

That countries like Poland do not trust Russia is historcal reasoned and also somehow understandable. But I do not talk about Poland and other countries, I talk about USA and how they handled and acted AGAINST Russia!

Why? Because you wanted all the time to have Russia as enemy and you did everything that this will happen!

Putin has been doing evil things almost as long as he has been in power, actually, and obviously it was not a good idea for Europe to become so dependent on Russia for energy as long as Russia is ruled by such a leader.

Ok ... then make a list please and tell me!
BTW ... if we are talking about internal things inside Russia, it does not matter, because it is an issue of Russia only and no one else!
So ... what foreign bad things has he done during the last 20 years frm the beginning on please?

Clinton's USG is responsible for the foolish NATO aggression in Southeastern and Central Europe in defiance of the UN.
Putin's Russia is responsible for this foolish invasion of Ukraine in defiance of the UN.

The US continues to pay a high price in blood and treasure for that stupid mistake.
Russia is already paying for its horrific strategic error in Ukraine.

    1. First Putin invades neutral Ukraine.
    2. Putin has apparently just threatened military action against Finland and Sweden.

YAHOO NEWS, Russia threatens 'serious military repercussions' if Finland joins NATO, By James Morris·Freelance news writer, Yahoo UK, Fri, February 25, 2022.
    https://news.yahoo.com/russia-military-repurcussions-finland-nato-163803214.html

Putin must think that Biden and the NATO leaders are pacifists.
Surely his intelligence services know better.

There can be no peace as long as Russia survives. To paraphrase the Roman Cicero "Russia must be destroyed".

The Romans had as much cause to work for the destruction of Russia as Americans.

Russia does need to get out of Ukraine and stop acting like the USSR.

I assume the question is not about nowadays, but about time since USSR collapsed until 2010.

The destruction of Russia would probably be a fatal blow for the West.

Yours is not really a logical argument.
So, if a herd of Eurasian Bison expand their size, the wolves & sundry predators, have a reason to think that they are now becoming aggressive, instead of defensive?

Though, if the canines see it as making it harder for them to cull a meal, from the herd, I would expect them to try all means, to prevent it from continuing-- including, (if the options were available) existing legal, & political, avenues.

"Bone-chilling" is a misleading way to term a statement that basically said that Russia would have to examine its options. It was as bland as bureaucratic language can be.

That said, I'm not trying to make any suggestions, as to what steps Russia might consider, or finally arrive at. But any bone chilling ideas, can only be creations, of the reader's own mind.

Russia has launched an aggressive war of conquest against another nation. In defiance of the UN and the advice of his own intelligence chief.
The threats against Finland and Sweden are taken very seriously by every nation near Russia.

“What's happening: Kazakhstan, one of Russia's closest allies, denied a request for its troops to join the attack on Ukraine, per NBC News.

    • The Czech Republic closed Russian consulates in the country and stopped issuing visas to Russians except for humanitarian cases.
    • The president of Bulgaria, which was Russia's closest ally during the Cold War, said the invasion was "absolutely inadmissible."
    • The ruling coalition leaders in Romania called Russia "the architect of the worst security crisis since World War II."
    • Moldovan President Maia Sandu said Russia’s attacks were launched "in violation of international norms," and the international community "unanimously condemns these military actions."
    • And Germany and Italy, which have strong economic ties to Russia, are both poised to support a European Union measure to cut Russia from the international SWIFT financial system.”
    Putin has miscalculated.
