Volker, I could understand everyone in the world who would shoot you just simple down because you are a German.

Nearly no one who grew up in the former GDR learned english. Did you work for the Stasi or a similiar organisation? Do you know that even today lots of people have to suffer on the effects of the problems created once from you and your friends?

How do you know this? Almost all children in the GDR learned two foreign languages, this was Russian and English or Russian and French for the most part. From my guess the majority of East Germans learned English in school, at least in my generation.

    No, I didn't.

    Name one.

If you would go to Russia, you probably would be surprised, how many Russians learned German in school.

Nowadays it's mainly English, but in Soviet Union learning German was pretty usual.

This board has a predominantly American membership by a huge majority, and they post in every section, including the European one. But this thread is inviting people to name German achievements - I do not think that appeals to the more nationalistic Americans.

From an American point of view it's a thread about Germany.

How many Americans do you know, who post in the European sections more often? These are not many. This is understandable, it applies to people from ther non-European nations, too. On the other hand, you don't see many Europeans posting in the Australian section, for instance. Or Americans posting there ...

Yeap, they got it wrong then and learned out of their mistakes.
Since then, however, they got it right most of the time, far more so than your nation.
    Enjoy your weekend!

By the same mentality, 90% of Americans are actually Europeans, then.

And the laughable thing is - the Yanks are up in arms when we comment in any but a positive way about THEIR shennaigans - what country they've decided to invade this time to get their oil, for example ! :p

Dear friend - his mentality has nearly nothing to do with Germans. Since yesterday I'm thinking about what's my duty to do against an Austrian who had said "Chancellor Merkel has as much blood on her hands as Adolf Hitler had". I would also not say such a stupidity has really something to do with an Austrian mentality. I'm very tired about all this extremists (Nazis and Commies in this case) and this all wakes in me only the feeling the best is it not to try to speak with human beings any longer.

It's historically dubious, if he did do so at all. The Verden story seems to be at least grossly exaggerated according to German Wikipedia, not to English Wikipedia.

Funny, how Germans, Dutchies and Belgians have claim to this person, only Frenchies don't seem to want to have him.

The Dutch claim may be the best.

I was taught in France that Charlemagne was French. The first time I realised that he might not have been that French, was during a conversation with a German man at a bar in Greece. I started to protest, almost getting angry:-Dat the idea of him being German. The German man I was drinking with, took a pause, and then asked me if it was very important whether Charlemagne was French or not. I had to agree it did not make the slightest of difference:)

Ok, he can not be German, because Germans did not start before Louis the German, and Louis the German was a grandson of Charlemagne. There simply were no Germans around at the time he lived. This is what we learned in school.

Dutch or Belgian claims played no role back then according to our history lessons, because both countries are much younger.

There is no doubt, that Franks were a Germanic tribe and Germans can not see Charlemagne as a Frenchie. What would this make us, a former French province?

I really did not know, that Frenchies see him as French, but it makes sense.

But you have to understand, that a German can not admit that he was French for obvious reasons

The French claim might be a language thing. France derives its name from the Franks who were a Germanic tribe, indeed. Thus Clovis and all are (in France) seeing as French, retrospectively. Additionally the Oaths of Strasbourg attest the existence of two different dialects, Old High German and Old French, used by the respective grandsons of Carolus Magnus.

However, when we see that France was once ruled by a Corsican, and Germany by an Austrian, it makes sense that we could have both been ruled by a Dutchie. "I am Carolus Magnus, the King of Dutchies" doesn't sound as frightful, though:mrgreen:

killed or displaced - I heard the word in the only sentence of the only source could mean both. Anyway Widukind had first lost the war against Charlesmagne - what meant he had to take the gods of the winners - the Christian god of Charlesmagne in this case. This was an unwritten law under german tribes. We are always taking the god(s) of the winners, beause it is an old german superstition that god is always with the winners only. (That's maybe also a reason that the people in the West of Germany became very good Capitalists while the people in the East of Germany became very good Communists). That Widukind was not able to accept the will of (the) god(s) so he rebelled later again against Charlesmagne - what made him to a criminal terrorist in the eyes of the most people of this time. That 4000 people of Widukind were punished for this crime is a story what is maybe true - maybe not. But for sure Charlesmagne had to make clear that he is really the new boss after he had won the second war against Widukind. I hope he had displaced the people only. In Germany are existing lots names like "Sachsenhausen" (=Saxons home) for example, so maybe in such places the people of Widukind found in little groups a new home widespreaded over Germany.

It was the area where the Franks came from, they were the Western neighbors of the Saxons. So the Dutchies probably come from the Franks fot an important part.

Frankonia on the other hand has been conquered by Franks later, and Saxonians are not Saxons, historically, the Saxonian royals were Saxons and this is where the name comes from.

Something like this may have happened to Frenchies ...

    ... and Bulgarians ...
    ... and Hungarians ...

... and many other peoples ...

Jurgen Klinsmann. The new USA football head coach. Let's hope he does a better job for them than Bertie Vogts did for Scotland..
