Guns + Mental Illness Question

Canada has 5.1 gun homicides per million people*, the US has 29.7. If guns (and easy access to guns) don't kill people and mentally ill kill people does that mean there are almost 6 times as many crazy people in the US as in Canuckia? For the sake of thread creation I will say that, based on many threads/posts here on this ethereal Oxford Union-like site I find it entirely plausible there are a disproportionate number of mentally ill folks in the Sacred Heartland.

*And less than 2 per million in Australia.

 

Your comparison is like comparing shark bite victims between Florida and Kansas. How come Kansas has so few shark bite victims?

 

A more apt comparison would be to compare a part of Florida with shark nets, patrols and other preventive measures to a wild, unfettered stretch of coast, both with the same number of people. I know which one I'd prefer to let my kids swim in while I drank beer in my hammock.

 

Maybe if Canada had the same black and brown gang problem that the US has, the numbers would more similar.

 

and if Canada had the legacy of racism, Apartheid, and discrimination that the USA has.

 

We have gangs, so it's not that.

Canadians don't have the same gun culture as Americans. We have guns, but they're used primarily for hunting and target shooting. Canadians don't have the same motivations related to fear of or animosity toward the government or groups. The idea of walking around wearing a gun is considered ridiculous. In addition a permit for a handgun, which is a restricted weapon, is relatively hard to get and of little interest to most Canadians.

 

Yeah that's it. Black gangbangers shooting other black gangbangers because they're so knowledgeable about history and are upset about it.

 

Not exactly, We could use Philippines as another example where there is a right to own a firearm, if proper procedures are followed. And there numbers are far lower than the US.

Oh yes. I forgot there are no drugs (or per brewskier, racial minorities) in Canada, Australia, etc. More American exceptionalism. Me bad.

 

Can't be drugs either. We've got them and some metro areas, like Vancouver's east side, have a serious problem with them.

 

Every time I find myself in the land of beavers, Canucks are always bringing that up, people that Canuckies don't have living in their land.

I've also never heard of a Canuck trying to outrun a Mountie.

 

That all depends if I'm armed with my Springfield Armory M-1A or armed with a smart phone dialing 911.

 

The most recent Statistics Canada information I can find is from 2013. That year there were 131 gun murders and our population was 35 million. So your chances of getting shot are pretty slim.

 

I think this statistic only proves one thing.

No it means our population is about 10 times more diverse and far more concentrated.

Vancouver, how many cities do you have with more than million population in which 30 different ethnic groups are living cheek by jowl that have spent the last 1000 years trying to find new and interesting ways to kill each other?

 

Technically, it depends on how you define mentally ill. Those who have violent mental tendencies, such as schizophrenia with paranoia, who are also armed with a firearm are definitely dangerous. But there are no universal ways to prevent gun sales, even from a licensed ATF dealer can prevent that sale based on how background checks are done currently.

 

So if Canada builds a wall from one ocean to the other because of crazy Americans, what would you think?

 

French and German, French and English, American and Canadian, and the list goes on.

Ethnically, Canada is somewhat diverse in its population.

 

For the sake of equality, let's ship the 1 million Blacks that live in Chicago to Canada or Australia. In recent years, there have been as many as 512 homicides in Chicago in one year(based on 3million population)---with Black on Black Crime being the overwhelming percentage.

The vast majority of Blacks in Chicago have a high tolerance for violence and have little stomach for blaming people like thugs and gangstas in their own community for doing the killings. They, like you, will blame the guns, poverty, lack of opportunities, and history of slavery and Jim Crow, and don't forget racism.

If you could transplant these Chicagoians to Toronto or Vancouver then they could have 30 times more homicides as well.
